A Study on Fish Farming in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh has the suitable environment for sustainable development by fish culture. Already fish culture has got tremendous success in many areas of Bangladesh. A survey was conducted under a project of BASA NGO in 2010. The information was collected from 385, 400, 376, 437, 397, 348 and 416 pond owners and fish farmers from Gauripur, Phulpur, Ishwargonj, Mirzapur, Gazipur, Kapasia and Sreepur Upazila respectively which covered a total of 2759 respondents. Collected information covered their literacy, occupation, pond ownership, pond and aquaculture status, fish marketing system, return and profitability from fish farming. More than 80% of the pond owners of the project areas was found to have certain level of education, only 13% was illiterate. Maximum number of pond owners responded that fish farming was their secondary occupation while agriculture was the principal occupation and 23% were engaged in some sorts of business. 96.7% fish farmers haven’t taken any kind of loan for farming, so they are self-dependent and mostly free of poverty. Among various troubles in fish farming, main problems encountered through this study were high price of feed and low price of fish in the market.

Objectives:

1. Information on socio-economic framework of the fish farmers forms a good base for planning and development of the economically backward sector.

Methodology:

Sample size: It was not possible to include all the farms under the study area because of limitation of time and recourses and so to fulfill the objectives of the study 2759 pond owners and fish farmers were selected for the survey. Design and test of questionnaire: For data collection, a set of interview schedule designed for this study. Both close and open questions were used in the questionnaire. The draft questionnaire was tested with 10 fish farmers in the study area. In the pilot survey, much attention was given to any new information, which was not designed to be asked, but was important and informative towards the objective. The questionnaire was changed, modified and rearranged according to the experience gathered in pre-testing of questionnaire. Data collection method: Fish farmers’ data were collected using questionnaire interviews, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) such as Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and cross-check interview with key informants. Cross-check interviews: After collecting the data through questionnaire interviews and FGD, it was checked through cross-check interview. Cross-check interviews were conducted with key informants such as Upazila Fisheries Officer, relevant NGO workers, Chairman and Members of the Union Councils, fry traders etc. Key informants were interviewed at their offices or houses.
