Environmental Degradation of Kutubdia: a Coastal Island in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study has been carried out to characterize the changing pattern of land use in Kutubdia Island and its impact on environment. The losses of vegetation cover and changes in landuse pattern have been investigated using remote sensing satellite data. Digital images of Landsat MSS 1979, TM 1989, TM 1997 and TM 2010). Digital analysis depicts the significant modification particularly on the agricultural land area that has been transformed mostly into salt beds. The study found that during last 31 years (1979-20100, 2401 hectares of agricultural land has been converted into salt bed. Destruction of 184 hectares of mangrove forest has been noticed. Evolution of the Island based on the erosion and accretion history over the span of 85 years (1925-2010) has also been depicted. A total of 1329 hectare of land has been washed out into the Bay over the period. Effects on biodiversity, ecology, underground water and livelihood due to change in landuse pattern have also been characterized.

Objectives:

1. To study the changing pattern of landuse with particular reference to salt cultivation and 2. To characterize the environmental impacts due to these changes.

Methodology:

Satellite Data used: i) Landsat MSS image of February 24, 1979, Landsat TM images of February 22, 1989, January 19, 1997, and February 24, 2010. ii) Aerial photographs of 1984 and 2000. iii) Different published reports, some secondary data and iv) field data collected though field visit. Remote sensing data was geo-referenced to Lambert Conformal Conic projection system using Linear Remote sensing data was geo-referenced to Lambert Conformal Conic projection system using Linear Transformation Matrix with Nearest Neighborhood re - sampling method. Pre-processed data was classified using on screen visual interpretation technique. Both the spectral and spatial aspects of the original images have been considered. Aerial photographs were used to verify the authenticity of different interpreted feature classes, which were under transformation over the period. A field visit was made and the prepared map was updated using the collected ground truth data. Landuse changes were determined for the last 31 years from 1979 to 2010. Necessary bands in Landsat images were used for analysis of landuse parameters for the specific requirements of the study. Aerial photograph of 1984 and 2000 were used to verify the authenticity of different feature types identified from the Landsat images.
