Susceptibility of Marigold Plants Raised from True Seeds and Stem Cuttings to Red Mite, Tetranychus Bioculatus (wood-mason) and Test of Pesticides

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Susceptibility of marigold plants grown from true seeds and stem cuttings against red mite, Tetranychus bioculatus (Wood-Mason) were studied in the laboratory. T. bioculatus multiplied rapidly on true seeded marigold plants showing of 629.17 mites per plant in the middle March from ten adults released on a single plant. There were 243.77 mites per plant on stem cutting marigold plants which suggest not suitable host of this mite. T. bioculatus prefer to feed on leaves than other plant parts like flower buds and flowers. The feeding damage showed scarifying symptoms of the leaves which turned to yellowish and then white with fine silken webs and some discoloration of the flower buds. Pesticidal tests using Lebaycid and Ethiosul performed around 90% mortality of the adult mites suggesting both can be used for their control.

Objectives:

1. To observe the susceptibility of marigold plants raised from true seed and stem cuttings and also effectiveness of two pesticides was observed against red mites.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted on population multiplication and pesticidal test on red mite, Tetranychus bioculatus on marigold plants in the laboratory of Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University(BAU), Mymensingh during January-April, 2008. The multiplication of red mites was examined on two types of marigold plants viz. true seeded plants and stem cutting plants. These types of marigold plants were planted in the earthen pots separately with one plant in each pot. Ten freshly emerged adult male and female red mites were collected from the naturally infested marigold plants grown in earthen pots outside the laboratory. They were released on a single marigold plant in each pot. A layer of grease was placed at the base of marigold plants to protect the mites from escaping. The multiplication of red mites was observed daily with the help of a magnifying glass. The mites reproduced and their eggs and immature (nymphs) were found on the leaves of marigold plants. Only the adults were counted from mite population daily per plant. Tests of two pesticides viz. Lebaycid 50EC as insecticide and Ethiosul 46.5EC as acaricide were carried out on red mite with marigold leaves. These pesticides were tested at three doses viz. 0.005, 0.0025 and 0.00125% active ingredient (AI). Three replicates for each dose and untreated control were included. Before conducting the tests 21 Petri dishes were properly washed with detergent powder. Fresh leaves were collected from true seeded marigold plants in which no pesticide was applied before and no mite infestation occurred. Adult mites, T. bioculatus used for the tests were reared in the laboratory. A fresh leaf was placed in each Petri dish and 10 adult mites were transferred from the rearing dish to each Petri dish separately by a well cleaned camel hair brush. The adult mites were sprayed with pesticides of each dose in three replicates separately using a hand sprayer (Windix). The spraying was done in such a way that there was no excessive pesticide solution in the Petri dishes. The sprayed dishes were allowed to dry for five minutes and then covered. A piece of sponge soaked with the respective pesticide solution was used to the petiole of the leaf in each dish to maintain moisture level. The control dishes were sprayed with water only. Mortality of red mites was recorded after 24, 48 and 72 hours of treatment. The mortality in different treatments was analyzed using CRD and the means were ranked following DMRT.
