Environmental Assessment of Effluents Discharged by Urea Fertilizer Industry Into the Karnafully River Estuary

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The impact of the effluents discharged by Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) on the water quality of the Karnafully River estuary has been investigated in this study. The physico-chemical properties of the river water and the effluents (temperature, transparency, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, electric conductivity, PH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total hardness, calcium hardness, chloride, salinity, PO₄-P, NH₃-N, NO₃-N and NO₂-N) were investigated. The water quality of the effluent discharged area was found to change significantly. The NH₄-N, NO₃-N, NO₂-N, PO₄-P, BOD and DO were found to decrease remarkably at the effluent discharge area in comparison to the controlled region.

Objectives:

1. To analyze the physicochemical parameters of the discharged effluents and to find out the changes in the physico-chemical parameters of the water body of the Karnafully River where effluents were discharged.

Methodology:

Collection and preservation of water samples - Surface and bottom water samples were collected by a clean plastic container (one liter) and Nansen bottle, respectively. For Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), water samples were collected by BOD bottles (300 ml). For analytical purpose, BOD samples were preserved following the method of APHA. Analysis of water sample - Physical parameters: Surface water temperatures were measured by using a Celsius thermometer while bottom water temperature was obtained from the reversing thermometer (0C) attached to the Nansen bottle. The Electrical Conductivity (EC) was determined by the Blackman Conductivity Meter of range 0-10,000 µmhos.cm-1 (Model: RB 3R 104, SER, 58833). Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and transparency of water were determined by a Secchi disc following the APHA. Chemical Parameters: PH was determined by using an electrically operated digital PH meter (Model: PW 9409, Phillips). Total hardness and Calcium hardness were determined by the EDTA titrimetric method. Chloride and salinity were determined by the Argentometric method. The Nesslarization method was applied for determination of NH₃-N. NO₃-N and NO₂-N were determined by the UV spectrophotometric method. The SnCl₂ method was followed for the estimation of PO₄-P. Total alkalinity, DO and BOD were determined by following the APHA.

Achievement/Findings:

The water quality of the effluent discharged area was found to change significantly. The NH₄-N, NO₃-N, NO₂-N, PO₄-P, BOD and DO were found to decrease remarkably at the effluent discharge area in comparison to the controlled region.
