State of Physico-chemical Composition of Urban Water Drainage Discharges in Khulna City Corporation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study is a physiochemical analysis to investigate the pollutant concentration in urban drainage discharges. Drainage water samples were collected from 08 (eight) discharging point in Khulna City Corporation in January, 2006. The physico-chemical properties such as pH, EC (Electrical Conductivity), TDS (Total Dissolve Solids), Na⁺, K+, Ca²⁺, Mg2+, Cl-, CO3^2-, HCO3 ^-, and SO4^2- were measured. All samples of water ware found to be alkaline with pH > 7. Some were found to be high EC and high TDS, which exceed the standard level. Some stations were found to be very high chloride concentrations and high sodium concentrations, which also exceed the standard level. Calcium and bicarbonate were also high in water of some stations. Potassium, carbonate, magnesium and sulphate concentrations were low, which were within the standard level.

Objectives:

1. To investigate the status of urban effluents on the receiving water bodies near the city of Khulna, Bangladesh, surveys were conducted in the sewers of the city through the physico-chemical characterization of drainage water.

Methodology:

To investigate the physico-chemical composition of drainage water, effluent samples were collected from eight sewers of the city’s sewerage network from different locations in and around the Khulna City Corporation during January 2006. The stations were Daulatpur (St-1), Khalishpur (St-2), Sadar Hospital (St-3), Rupsha Ferighat (St-4), Shipyard (St-5), Gollamari Bridge (St-6), Sonadanga (St-7) and Boyra (St-8). One and half liter plastic bottles were acid washed for collecting water samples. The bottle was rinsed with water 3 times before collection of water. After collection of water samples the bottles were securely sealed with proper labeling (sample number and location name). Aeration during sampling was avoided as far as possible. Samples were collected in plastic bottles and their mouths were closed properly for avoiding air bubbles. The water samples were collected directly from the outlet. In the laboratory, the water sample was filtered by filter paper to remove the suspended materials. Then the samples were stored in plastic containers after acidification for chemical analysis. The samples were preserved by adding 4-5 drops of HNO3 (.01N) to control the changing of the chemical characteristics of water. Then the samples were kept in the Environmental Science Laboratory, Khulna University. Immediately after sampling, pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) were measured in the field by a portable pH (Hanna) and an EC/TDS meter (Hanna). DO were measured by DO meter (model no. TDO 519) and BOD5 were measured following the methods described the standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater (APHA, 1989). Sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) were measured using flame photometer (Model No. PEP 7 and PEP 7/C). Calcium (Ca2⁺) and magnesium (Mg2+) were determined titrimetrically using standard EDTA. Chloride (Cl^-) was determined by ion selective electrode method (Cole-Parmer iodine electrode, model no. 27502-13). Bicarbonate (HCO3^-) concentrations were determined by potentiometric titration method. Sulphate (SO4^2-) analyses of the water samples were carried out using UVvisible spectrophotometer. High purity analytical reagents were used throughout the study, and chemical standards for each element when necessary were prepared separately. Some useful conventional statistical techniques were used.
