Effect of Mulching and Spacing on the Growth and Yield of Strawberry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi during November 2010 to April 2011 to find out the effect of mulch materials and plant spacing on the growth and yield of BARI strawberry-1. There were three mulch materials viz. Black polyethylene, Bamboo sticks, and straw along with control and four plant spacing viz. 50×30 cm, 50×40 cm, 50×50 cm and 50×60 cm. All mulch materials had significant effect on the yield of strawberry. However, mulching with straw gave the highest fruit yield plant^-1 (182 g) and per ha (8.68 ton), which was statistically similar to black polyethylene mulch. The closest plant spacing showed highest yield per ha (9.856 ton) where as wider plant space showed lower yield performance (5.438 t/ha). This might be due to higher number of plants per unit area. Considering the growth characteristics, yield and fruit quality, BARI Strawberry –1 showed the best performance in the field when the crop was grown using 50×30 cm plant spacing in combination with straw mulch. However, the highest yield/ha (12.15 ton) was found in case of straw mulch with 50×30 cm spacing which was followed by black polyethylene with 50×30 cm spacing.

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate mulch materials and plant population for growth, yield and quality of strawberry.
To study the interaction effects mulching and plant spacing on strawberry

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Station, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during December 2010 to March 2011 to find out the effect of mulch materials and plant spacing of the growth yield of BARI Strawberry-1. There were three mulch materials viz. Black polyethylene, transparent polyethylene and straw along with control and four plant spacing viz. 50×30 cm, 50×40 cm, 50×50 cm and 50×60 cm. According to the plant spacing 50×30 cm, 50×40 cm, 50×50 cm and 50×60 cm plants per hectare of land will be 66666, 50000, 40000 and 33333 respectively. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block (RCB) Design with 3 replications. The runners of strawberry plants were planted in December 2, 2010 in late due to lack of availability of runner though it was wise to plant in October. The plants were fertilized with decomposed cow dung, N, P₂O₅, and K fertilizers @ 1.5Kg, 6.5g, 3g and 5g respectively. All the cow dung, P₂O₅ and half of K fertilizer were applied during bed preparation. Total N and rest K were applied 20 days interval at equal splits from 15 days after planting. A 50 cm drain between the beds was also maintained for facilitating irrigation and drainage and also used as inter cultural operation. Flood irrigation was applied after fertilizer application and during drought periods. Runners of strawberry plants were removed 2/3 days after emergence. Weeding, spraying of insecticide and fungicide were done when necessary. Fully ripe fruits were harvested from the plant and data on different parameters were recorded and the mean data were presented after following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:
