Effect of Bending on Growth and Yield of Pear

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on pear var. BARI Naspati-1 with six treatments viz. B0 [no bending (control)], B1 (bending at the height of 120 cm), B2 (bending at the height of 140 cm), B3 ( bending at the height of 145 cm), B4 (bending at the height of 115 cm) and B5 (bending at the height of 150 cm) was carried out at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati during the 2010 - 2011 with a view to observing the effect of bending on growth and yield of pear cv. BARI Naspati -1 in hilly region. Maximum base girth was recorded in B3 (20.67 cm), while minimum control (16.67 cm). The B3 treatment gave the highest number of primary branches/plant (6.67) which was at par with B4 treatment. The highest number of secondary branches/plant was found in control treatment followed by B1 and B5 treatments. The B2 treatment produced the highest number of new shoot/branch. The B0 treatment gave the maximum number of spurs/branch. Among the treatments except control, B2 and B3 treatments gave the highest no. of spurs/branch, number of flowers/plant and fruits.

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate height of bending and on growth and yield of pear
To study the effects of bending on pear

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati hill district. The saplings of BARI Naspati -1 were transplanted on June 15, 2008 @ one seedling into prepared pit in the field. One year old saplings were transplanted. The experiment consisted of six treatments viz. B₀[nobending (control)], B₁ (bending at the height of 120 cm), B₂ (bending at the height of 140 cm), B₃(bending at the height of 145 cm), B₄ (bending at the height of 115 cm) and B₅ (bending at the height of 150 cm).The experiment was laid out in RCB with three replications. The planting distance was 4 m X 4 m. The pit was fertilized with cowdung @ 10 kg, urea, TSP, MP, ZnSO₄_,Boric acid and Dolomite 600g, 500g, 500g, 10g, 5g, and 1kg/plant respectively. The total amount of cowdung, TSP, 1/3 ^rd urea and MP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of urea, MP and total others fertilizers were applied in two equal installments at before and after rainy season. Data on growth characters were recorded. Data were analyzed statistically. Mean separations were done at 5% level of probability by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

In this experiment it was found that bending had positive effect on plant growth, brunch number, sprouting and shooting. Among the treatment the B₂ and B₃treatments showed better growth performances regarding number of spurs per branch, number of flowers per plant and yield.
