This study was conducted at the research field of IWM Division, BARI, Gazipur to find out irrigation effects on yield and quality of BARI Alu-25 and 28 during the winter season of 2012-13 and 2013-14. There were six irrigation treatments each replicated thrice in a two factor randomized complete block design. The highest water use and yield (average 164.32 mm and 36.96 t ha-1) was found by three irrigation at stolonization, tuberization and bulking stage whereas, BARI Alu-25 needed more water to produce highest yield, and biomass than BARI Alu-28. Both varieties performed better in irrigation at tuberization and bulking stage in terms of water productivity. Tuberization stage was the critical stage to irrigation for processing potato cultivation. Both varieties along with two irrigations at tuberization and bulking stage were found financially feasible. BARI Alu-25 and 28 were suitable for producing chips and french fry in consideration of tuber size. Regarding quality parameters and storage loss, both varieties along with two irrigations at tuberization and bulking stage were found better quality. Therefore, Producers will be benefitted by applying two irrigations instead of three as well as saved water can be used for other purposes.

  1. To evaluate the irrigation effect on yield and quality of processing potato varieties,
  2. To find out the critical stage to irrigation,
  3. To determine water use efficiency
  4. To determine financial feasibility of processing potato cultivation.

This experiment was set up at the research field of IWM Division, during the rabi season of 2012-2013 and 2013-12014 with two processing potato varieties of BARI Alu-25 (V1) and BARI Alu-28 (V2). The soil characteristic was sandy clay in texture and average soil pH was 6.45. Volumetric soil water content at field capacity and wilting point were 29% and 14.2%, respectively. Each treatment was replicated thrice with one additional spare plot. The experimental design was two factors randomized complete block with six treatments: T1= Irrigation at stolonization stage (27 DAP), T2= Irrigation at tuberization stage (42 DAP), T3= Irrigation at bulking stage (51 DAP), T4= T1 + T3, T5= T2 + T3, and T6= T1 + T2 + T3. Recommended fertilizer doses were followed(FRG, 2012). Standard crop management practices were done. The unit plot size and spacing were 4 m × 3 m and 60 cm x 25 cm, respectively. A pre-irrigation of 20 mm was applied in the field for ensuring proper elongation. The crop was harvested on 20 and 24 February in 2013 and 2014. The soil water content was monitored at 10 d intervals in each plot by using the gravimetric method, and yield contributing and yield data were collected during 60 DAP and after harvest. For quality data, harvested potato tubers were graded, made potato product (chips and French fry), monitored storage loss, its color and crispiness, external color and tuber specific gravity and observed tuber chemical properties. Finally, all the measured data were analyzed statistically by using R software (Version 3.1.1). Mean separation was done by least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of probability.

Yield and yield contributing characters were found significantly highest in treatment V1T6 whereas previous years result was comparatively better than the next but the trend was same. The significant highest number and weight of tuber (5.13 and 431.00 g) was found in treatment V1T6 which was followed by V1T5 (4.41 and 401.00g). The significant lowest weight loss (average 12.17%) was observed in treatment V2T5 whereas, significant highest (22.66%) was found in treatment V1T6. Treatment V2T5 produced golden yellow color which was followed by V1T5.Treatment V2T5 was found better appearance and taste which was followed by V1T5. The highest total soluble solid, dry matter and starch were found in treatment V2T5 (5.82%, 23.63%, and 17.28%) which was followed by V1T5 (5.50%, 22.71%, and 16.40%). The highest water productivity (average 24.91 kg m-3) was obtained from treatment V2T5 which was followed by treatment V1T5 (average 24.47 kg m-3). It was also found that after harvest soil moisture in treatment V1T1, V2T1, V1T2, V2T2, V1T3, and V2T3 were below wilting point (14.1%) for the first year whereas in the following year none of treatment was found below wilting point.
