Effect of Drain Soil Amendments on Growth, Yield and Yield Components of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out, during January to June, 2010 to evaluate the effect of drain soil on the growth and yield of rice and to determine the nutrient status of drain soil. There were five treatments such as control (T₁= 100% field soil), T₂ (100% drain soil), T₃ (75% field soil + 25% drain soil), T₄ (50% field soil + 50% drain soil) and T₅ (25% field soil + 75% drain soil). The pots were arranged in Randomized Completely Block Design (RCRD) with 3 replications having 5 treatments. The rice yield and yield contributing parameters such as tiller number, length of panicle, weight of panicle, 100 grain weight, and weight of filled grain influenced statistically significantly at 5% level of significant by drain soil containing treatments as compared to control. However, the plant height did not influenced statistically significantly among different treatments by drain soil. The highest tiller number, length of panicle, weight of panicle was observed in T₂ (100% drain soil) treatment. However, 100 grain weight and weight of filled grain were found in T₅ treatment. Considering the chemical properties of soil, T₂ treatment (100% drain soil) contained higher amount of essential plant nutrients as compared to other treatments. The yield of rice increased with the increased of plant height, tiller number, panicle length, panicle weight, 100 grain weight and weight of filled grain. However, all of the relationships were not statistically significant at 5% level of significant except filled grain and yield.

Objectives:

To determine 1. The effect of drain soil on the growth, yield components and yield of rice, 2. The nutrient status of decomposed drain soil and 3. The suitable dose of decomposed drain soil amendments for rice plants.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in pots and ten kg of soil was kept in each earthen pot where the pot size was 25 cm × 25 cm. The experiment was conducted in Randomized completely block design with 5 treatments and 3 replications where the treatments are 100% field soil (control), 100% drain soil, 75% field soil + 25% drain soil, 50% field soil+ 50% drain soil and 25% field soil+ 75% drain soil. The field soil was collected from the experimental field of Agriculture Farm, Department of Environmental Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University while the drain soil was collected from Ganginarpar, Mymensingh. Three seedlings of 45 days aged BRRI dhan-29 were planted into each pot. The seedlings were transplanted on 13 January, 2010 where as the harvesting was done on 13 May, 2010. Morphological data such as plant height (cm), tillers no, leaf area index, panicle length, panicle weight, weight of filled and unfilled grain, total grain, 100 grain weight and grain yield/plant were collected and recorded throughout the growing season of rice. Physical and chemical constitutions of soil sample and drain soil wererecorded. After harvest, the nutrient contents of the soil were analyzed following various standard methods. Soil pH was measured by pH meter while EC was measured by using conductivity meter. Soil organic carbon was determined by wet oxidation method and total N was measured by micro-kjeldahl method. P, K, S and N were determined colorimetrically. The recorded data were analyzed using “Analysis of Variance” technique and mean differences were recognized by DMRT with the help of a computer package MSTAT –C.
