Variation of Soil Properties with Their Type of Use and Distance from River

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to observe the properties of soils with the distance from the river. Two types of lands such as agricultural and fallow lands were used in the experiment to collect samples. It is found that the distance of the agricultural lands from the river has no influence on the texture, pH and moisture content of the soils. The soil samples of agricultural lands EC, %OM, total P, S, total K, available Ca and Mg content of the samples decrease with distance from the river. The opposite scenario was observed in the case of fallow lands i.e. in the lands which are not used for agricultural practices. There is no statistical difference in pH, moisture, texture, total P and total K of the lands with distance from the river. EC, OM, total S, available Ca and available Mg content of the soils decrease with distance from the river.

Objectives:

To evaluate Variation of Soil properties with their type of use and distance from river.

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out to study the physical and chemical parameters of some soils of Porabari, Tangail district. The soil sampling was done from some agricultural lands. The lands were selected considering the distance of the Dholeshwari river. A total of 32 samples were collected of which 16 were from agricultural land and another 16 were from fallow lands which are recently not used for agricultural activities. Small grasses were only there. SA means samples from agricultural lands and SF means samples from fallow lands. The soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory for their physical, chemical and physicochemical properties.

Achievement/Findings:

The runoff and agricultural practices influence the properties of soils. The river water was used for the irrigation of the agricultural lands. The river water might have some influence on the identified properties of the soils. The washing out of nutrients both by rain water and excessive water from other sources might have influenced to increase nutrient content of the soils closer to river.
