A 4-month growth trail was conducted in renovated derelict ponds of Sylhet Agricultural University campus (SAU) from first June to 31 September 2009 to determine the culture suitability and growth performance of Monosex tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). To make the derelict ponds suitable for fish culture, all the ponds were reclamated. As part of pond reclamations bottom mud and aquatic weeds were removed from the ponds. Dikes were also repaired. The ponds were fertilized and manured to increase the natural productivity. Due to slightly acidic pHof soil, ponds were limed @ 1.5 kg/decimal to neutralize the pH. Fish were stocked at the rate of 200/decimal. Fish were fed commercial pelleted feed (Aftab Folating Fish Feed Ltd.) at the rate of 15 % of their body weight for the first fifteen days, 10% for the next fifteen days and gradually it become decreased to 8, 5, and 3% of their body weight for the last three months. Water quality parameters were measured during the experimental period and the water quality parameters were within the acceptable range of fish culture. The survival rates were high (>75%) in all ponds. The specific growth rate ranged between 3.65 and 3.68 and feed conversion ratio (FCR) ranged between 2.23 and 2.30 with pond P1 showing the lowest i.e. the best FCR followed by P2, and P3. Production was found 6162.00, 6219.21 and 6231.31 kg /ha in ponds P1, P2 and P3 respectively. The result of the present study demonstrated that the Mmonosex tilapia showed good growth performance and can be considered as a very suitable species for culture in reclamated derelict ponds.

1. To determine cultural suitability and growth performance of monosex tilapia in renovated derelict pond and to increase fish production through successful aquaculture in fellow ponds of greater Sylhet region.

To renovate the derelict ponds of Sylhet Agricultural University campus, firstly all the ponds were drained out completely. Aquatic weeds were removed manually and the grasses on the pond dykes were also pruned manually into very small size. The bottom mud was also removed manually and the repairing of the dike was done where necessary. The ponds were serially numbered as 1 to 3 for the convenience of the study. pH of the soil sample was determined to fix up the dose of lime. Due to slightly acidic pH of the soil sample (6.0 - 6.5) lime was applied at the rate of 1.5 kg/decimal. Lime was soaked in an earth hole beside the pond dike for overnight and then applied by spreading homogeneously in the pond. Three days after liming the ponds were manured with cowdung at the rate of 4 kg/decimal. One week after liming the ponds were filled with water and fertilized with urea and TSP at the rate of 100 g/decimal. TSP was soaked overnight, then urea and TSP were dissolved together and spreaded manually on pond water surface in the morning. The fingerlings of Monosex tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with mean initial weight of 2.0±0.03 g were procured from “Al Hossaini Sammonnito matsha khamar, Kadamtoli, Sylhet. The fry were of about one month old. These fry were brought to Fisheries Faculty, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet using oxygenated polythene bag. Fingerlings of monosex tilapia (O. niloticus) with mean initial weight of 2.0 ± 0.03 g were stocked at the rate of 200/decimal. Commercial tilapia feed (Aftab Floating Feed Ltd.; Nursery, starter, Grower and Finisher) were collected from Sylhet local market. The proximate composition of these supplemental feeds was analyzed from Fish Nutrition Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh according to standard procedures given by Association of Official Analytical Chemists. The gross energy (GE) content of the diets was calculated using KJ values of 23.0, 38.1 and 17.2g-1 for protein, lipid and carbohydrate, respectively and the results are presented in Table 1. The feed was supplied at the rate of 15 % of their body weight for the first fifteen days 10% for the next fifteen days and gradually it become decreased to 8, 5, and 3% of their body weight for the last three months. Commercial tilapia feeds (Aftab floating fish feed) were dispersed by hand broadcasting over the water. A record of supplied feed was kept for determining the feed conversion ratio (FCR).
