Effects of Socioeconomic Factors on Domestic Solid Waste Generation and Dumping in Tangail Municipal Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research was conducted to explore the variation of daily domestic waste generation rate of different households in the Tangail Municipal Area. An effort was made to relate the daily domestic waste generation rate with two important factorsmonthly income level and total number of member of the respondent’s household. The study evidently demonstrated that higher the income level and family members, higher the daily domestic solid waste generation rate. Suggestions from the respondents to improve the existing practice for waste collection and management were also gathered from the study.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were: i) To find out a relation between daily domestic waste generation rate and monthly income level of the inhabitants of Tangail Municipal areas, ii) To relate daily domestic waste generation rate with total number of members in a family, and iii) To gather local peoples’ suggestion to improve the existing condition of waste management in the study area. Out put of this study could benefit planners for formulating realistic plan on solid waste management plan for this municipality.

Methodology:

Study area - The study was conducted in the Tangail Municipal areas. Tangail Municipality was established in July, 1887 and consists of 18 wards and 63 mahallas. The area of the town is about 35.22 square km. It has a total population of 1, 28,785, including 66,856 males and 61,929 females. The municipality consists of 21,115 households and the density of population is 3650 per square km (Tangail Municipality, 2006). Among 18 wards of the municipality, 3 Wards namely Ward 1: Zilla Sadar, Dewla, North Akurtatur para, Dhul; Ward 8: Santosh, West Aloua; and Ward 18: Sabalia, Kodalia had been selected randomly for survey. From these 3 selected wards, 19 respondents were taken from Ward 1; 26 respondents from Ward 8; 23 respondents from Ward 18 proportionately by using simple random sampling where Ward1 consists of 864 households, Ward 8 consists of 1228 households and Ward 18 consists of 1041 households. Data Collection - Both qualitative and quantitative techniques of data collection were used for this study. Primary data were primarily collected through a sample survey of the households. Survey was conducted in different households representing high, middle, lower-middle and low-income groups and the family member range in relation with the solid waste generation rate. Secondary information was collected through reviewing research journals, newspapers, related books and from the annual reports of Tangail Municipality. Sampling - The total household numbers of the municipal area was 21115 where 3 wards taken for survey consist of 3133 households. Out of total households three wards 68 were taken for the survey purpose. Simple random sampling method was used for selecting number of households. Sample size was determined using the approach as follows: i) the desired precision/ error, (e) is 10%, ii) the desired confidence level, (z) is 90%, iii) determine the z value associated with the confidence level, iv) the value of z at 90% confidence level is 1.645, v) In the absence of the target proportion (p) I assumed it is 50% i.e. p= 0.50, vi) Total households, N= 21115. Data analysis - Findings was processed and analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics through using SPSS statistical package.
