Observation of the Properties of High Land Soils of Tangail Sadar, Porabari and Charabari

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to observe some physical and chemical properties of high land soils of Tangail Sadar, Porabari and Charabari. The soils were collected from the high agricultural lands of those areas. The physical properties of soil like texture, density, porosity and moisture content and chemical properties like PH , EC , % Organic matter, Total Nitrogen (N), Total Phosphorus (P), Total Sulphur (S), Ca, Mg, K etc. were analyzed. Tangail Sadar soil samples showed the presence of high amount organic matter and most other nutrients compared to the Porabari and Charabari soil samples. In all most all cases the top soil samples those are used for agricultural activities were carrying lesser amount of nutrient elements because of may be leaching or plant uptake though the different result was observed in fallow lands.

Objectives:

1. To observe the physical and chemical properties of high land soils of Tangail sadar, Porabari and Charabari.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in three areas of Tangail district. The soils from three high agricultural lands of Tangail Sadar, Porabari and Charabari were collected. The bulk soil samples representing depths of 0–150 mm depth below the surface were collected using the composite soil sampling method, as suggested by the soil survey staff of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA 1951) using augers, and spades and crowbars (for bulk samples). An augar was used to collect soil samples. Soils were collected from two different depths (0-15 cm and 15- 30 cm). The collected soil samples were dried in air for 3 days by spreading in a thin layer on a clean piece of paper. Visible roots and debris were removed from the soil sample and discarded. For hastening the drying process, the soil samples were exposed to sunlight. After air-drying, a portion of the larger and massive aggregates were broken by gently crushing them by a wooden hammer. Ground samples were screened to pass through a 2 mm stainless steel sieve. The sieved samples were then mixed thoroughly for making a composite sample. Soil samples were preserved in plastic containers and labeled properly showing the soil number, sample number and date of collection. These soil samples were used for various physical analyses. The collected soil samples were brought to the laboratory and tagged with necessary information such as date, place of collection, depth and no. of samples. The physical properties of soil like texture, density, porosity and moisture content and chemical properties pH, EC, Organic Matter, Ca, Mg, Total Phosphorus, Total Sulphur, and Total nitrogen were analyzed. After collection of soil samples they were dried, ground and sieved through a 0.5 mm sieve. For the analysis of pH and EC, electronic pH meter and electronic EC meter were used, respectively. The aqua regia/nitric acid digests were also used for determination of P, K and S. The total nitrogen of all the materials was determined by alkali distillation of the Kjeldahl digest; total P was determined spectrophotometrically by developing the vanadomolybdate yellow colour; K was determined by flame analyser; and the S was determined by turbidimetry method using Tween-80. The other physical and chemical tests were performed. All the tests were done three times to minimize errors. For the statistical analysis of the data the statistical software SPSS 17 were used.
