A number of satellite data provide temporal monitoring of Aman rice but all of these have some advantage and draw back. The AVHRR and MODIS raw imagery are not adequate enough for temporal monitoring of Aman rice due to cloud cover in monsoon period. Landsat/SPOT data are not frequent enough for monitoring changes in crop patterns during the critical growth periods. RADARSAT data is very much useful for such purpose but it is not available as it is very expensive. So study of temporal changes of Aman rice monitoring using Moderate Resolution Imagine Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) 16-day composite NDVI is helpful for such purpose. The underlying idea in adopting a 16-day compositing strategy is that, there is a good possibility of getting a cloud-free occasion in every 16 days time period in a particular season. In the above context an attempt was made to construct the temporal and spatial growth profile of Aman rice at 2007 over Bangladesh using MODIS 16-day composites NDVI data. For identifying the temporal and spatial growth profiles, representative numbers of sampling site were selected from the temporal composite of NDVI images. Previous Year Difference (PYD) method has been applied for analyzing damaged Aman rice area identification. This study reveals that about 24% area of Aman rice was affected during the July/August flood in 2007 and about 25.4% area was affected in September flood in 2007. Insitu ground observation of some selected area shows 16 days composite data is useful for temporal monitoring of Aman rice as well as flood stress analysis in absence of RADARSAT data.

1. To construct the temporal and spatial growth of Aman rice of 2007 over Bangladesh based on MODIS 16-day composites NDVI incorporate with GIS and GPS.

To overcome the temporal and spatial growth profiles, representative numbers of sampling site have been selected from the temporal composite of NDVI images. For post hazard situation analysis Previous Year Difference (PYD) method has been applied for identifying the post-flood situation over Bangladesh. The study area covers the Bangladesh extending from 20.700 N to 26.800 N latitudes and from 88.010 E to 92.750 E longitudes. It is surrounded by India in three sides east, west and north, Myanmar in the Southeast and Bay of Bengal in the south. Bangladesh grows a wide variety of crops, which are broadly classified, according to seasons in which they are grown, into three categories, namely (a) Kharif 1 (March 16 - May 15); (b) Karif 2 (May 16 - October 15) and (c) Rabi (October 16 to March 15) seasons. Kharif crops are grown in the spring or summer season and harvested in late summer or in early winter. Kharif crops include Aus, Aman and Boro rice. Aman rice is planted in late June to July and harvest in November to Mid December. Rabi crops are sown in winter and harvested in the spring or early summer (BBS). Terra-MODIS 16-day composite 250-meter resolution NDVI data have been used during the period from late July to December for the year 2006 and 2007. The composite data sets are Julian day209 for the time period Jul 28 to Aug 12, day 225 for Aug 13 to Aug 28, day 241 for Aug 29 to Sep 13, day 257 for Sep 14 to Sep 30, day 273 for Oct 1 to Oct 16, day 289 for Oct 17 to Nov 1, day 305 for Nov 2 to Nov 18 and Julian day 321 for the time period Nov 19 to Dec 5. Each data set contains two frames to covered Bangladesh. These frames are h25v06 and h26v06. Cloud free MODIS raw data of Julian day 297 (October 24) for Gaibandha district has been used for crop damaged area identification and field have been used for generation of forest and urban areas. GPS based ground-truth data also used for field verification. Statistical data collected from Agriculture extension of Gaibandha district.
