A study was conducted to find out the field performance of microtubers and plantlet derived minitubers of potato in the Environmental Science Departmental Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University during November, 2005 to March, 2006. Among the mulches, the highest number of leaves plant-1 (86.37), plant height (71.14 cm), number of tubers plant-1 (19.93), and yield plant-1 (421.21 g) were obtained in black polythene whereas without mulch gave the lowest number of leaves (53.69), leaf area (2322.74 cm2), number of main stems (2.10), number of tubers (13.43) and yield (352.57 g) plant-1. Among the planting materials, tuber of Cardinal gave the highest number of leaves (91.25), main stems (4.25) and yield (528.99 g) plant-1 while minituber of Cardinal gave maximum leaf area (2993.93 cm2) and tubers (18.71) plant-1. Concomitantly, microtuber of Diamant produced the lowest number of leaves (59.20), leaf area (2179.37 cm2), number of main stems (1.80) and yield (254.05 g) plant-1. In field performance of microtuber and minituber, tuber of Cardinal produced the highest number of stems plant-1 (5.60) and tuber of Diamant produced the tallest plant (75.87 cm) with white polythene. Minituber of Cardinal produced the highest number of tubers (24.27) and tuber of Cardinal produced the highest yield (597.40 g) plant-1 with black polythene.

1. To find out the field performance as seed potato of microtubers, minitubers and common tubers performance with different mulch need to be investigated.

The experiment of field performance on plantlet derived microtubers, minitubers and normal tubers of potato cultivars were collected from previous experiment to compare with different mulch. The experiment was consisted of two factors; mulches (Water hyacinth, Straw, White polythene, Black polythene & control); Planting materials (Diamant-tuber, Diamant-minituber, Diamant-microtuber, Cardinal-tuber, Cardinal-minituber and Cardinal-microtuber,). Consequently, the total treatment combinations were 30. Data were analyzed by statistical package MSTAT in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications and Microsoft Excel wherever applicable. The analysis of variance was performed and means were compared by the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The soil of the field was sandy loam with a pH 8.0. The land was prepared finely by plowing, cross plowing and labeling. During land preparation entire dose of 15 t ha-1 cow dung and TSP: MoP: gypsum: ZnSO4:50% urea 220- 270-120-5-180 kg ha-1 respectively was applied as basal dose. Microtubers, plantlet derived minitubers and tubers were sown with a standard spacing of 50 cm between the rows and 25 cm between the plants. Earthing up was done once after emergence of plants and weeding was done as and when needed till mulching. The remaining portion of urea (180 kg ha-1) was side-dressed at the time of earthing up. Four types of mulches viz. straw, water hyacinth, white polythene and black polythene were applied immediate after earthing up. One treatment was remained for control. The crops were protected against any kinds of destructive animals and birds by employing whole time guard and against cutworm and Phytophthora blight by spraying Dust burn and Dithane M-45 respectively. About three months after planting, when the plants began to senesce, the tubers were harvested manually. Data on Soil moistures were recorded at sowing, at active vegetative stage and at harvesting manually on the basis of oven dried soil. Weather data were collected from Meteorological Department of Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology of BAU.
