Farm Level Evaluation of Modern Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh in 2012-13

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice is being grown in three seasons namely Aus, Aman and Boro, the rate of adoption of variety differs substantially from season to season and location to location. Present study was undertaken to determine the adoption rate and yield of different rice varieties. Data were collected from ten agricultural regions of Bangladesh following multistage random sampling technique through face to face interview method using pre-designed questionnaire.Finding of the study indicated that . BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were the most popular varieties in Boro season. These two varieties covered about 64% of the total Boro area. BR11 and BRRI dhan49 were the most popular varieties in T. Aman season covering 20% of total T. Aman area. In Aus season, the area coverage of BRRI dhan28 was the highest (19.15%) followed by BRRI dhan48 (7.19%). Among BRRI varieties, BRRI dhan29 was the top yielder in Boro (5.71 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan58 (5.50 t/ha). In T. Aman Season BRRI dhan28 ranked top in terms of per unit yield (5.30 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan49 (4.78 t/ha). In Aus season BRRI dhan28 also gave higher yield(5.02 t/ha) followed by both BR14 and BRRI dahn48 (4.40 t/ha). Recently some Hybrid varieties are being adopted as replacement of other MVs Boro and Aus seasons due to higher yield performance.

Objectives:

To determine the region-wise adoption rate of different MVs in Boro, Aus and T. Aman seasons;
To estimate the yield of different modern and local rice varieties.

Methodology:

Multistage stratified random sampling technique was adopted in selecting the sample farmers. Forty six, forty six and thirty six districts under 10 agricultural regions were selected on the basis of high and low level of MV adoption in Boro, T. Aman and Aus season, respectively. At least one Upazila from each of the sample district was selected in each season. The study finally used a sample of 1339, 1339 and 1356 rice growing farmers in Boro, T. Aman and Aus seasons, respectively. Thus, the total sample stands at 4034. Indeed, pooled data was used in this study to cover most of the districts of Bangladesh from 2009/10 to 2013/14.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall adoption of modern varieties in T. Aman season increased from 34% in 1990-91 to 79% (i.e., 60.48% increases) in 2013-14 and the adoption rate increase in Aus season was 60.48% . In case of modern Boro varieties, the adoption rate was 88.93% in 1990-91which reached to 97.61% in 2013-14 resulting to 8.68 % increase. The increase of yield was much higher in Aus season (109.04%) and T. Aman season(33.13%) compared to Boro season.(17.69%)
