Estimation of Costs and Return of Mv Rice Cultivation at Farm Levelin 2012-13

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cost and return of rice production will help producer, researcher and planner to identify actual situation in rice production. Data were collected from ten agricultural regions using structured questionnaire. Results of the study indicated that rice farmers still used around 38 kg seed per hectare irrespective of cropping season which is more than the recommended rate (25-30 kg/ha) .In case input cost, around 39, 48 and 45% cost incurred for labor in Boro T. Aman and Aus rice cultivation respectively,. whereas cost incurred for fertilizer was around 9, 9 and 7% for Boro ,T. Aman and Aus rice and irrigation cost was around 14, 1 and 2% respectively.. Yield obtained in Boro ,T.Aman and Aus seasons were 5.31, 4.38 and 3.85 t/ha and net return were 1144,15052 and -8240 Tk/ha respectively.. MV T.Aman rice grower received higher net return due to lower production cost and better market price.

Objectives:

Determine the level of inputs used in MV Aus, MV T.Aman and MV Boro rice cultivation;
Estimate the cost of MV rice cultivation in different seasons; and
Evaluate the profitability of MV Aus, MV T.Aman and MV Boro rice cultivation at the farm level.

Methodology:

Multistage random sampling technique was adopted to select the rice farmers from 10 agricultural regions of Bangladesh. In order to carry out the cost-return analysis, the study used a sample survey of 60 Aus, 60 T.Aman and 60 Boro rice growing farmers. Data were collected through direct interviewing the farmers using structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using simple tabular form.

Achievement/Findings:

Rice farmers still used more seed than the recommended rate irrespective of cropping seasons. Although they used higher dose of Urea they applied comparatively very lower amount of MP fertilizer due to their ignorance. MV Boro growers obtained higher yield due to better cropping environment, good management practices and use of better genotypes. They received comparatively lower amount of gross return from MV Aus and MV Boro owing to lower market price. MV T. Aman growers received higher net return due to better market prices.
