Evaluation of Different Cropping Patterns for Their Water Requirement Compared to Boro-fallow-t. Aman in Medium Highland Ecosystem During 2013-14

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To intensify and diversify the high and medium highland ecosystems, this experiment was conducted at East Byde, BRRI Experimental Farm, Gazipur during, Kharif II-2013, Rabi 2013-14 and Kharif I-2014 season. Five cropping patterns viz., Tomato - Mungbean - T. Aman, Wheat -Mungbean - T. Aman, Potato -T. Aus - T. Aman, Lentil -T. Aus- T. Aman and Chickpea - T. Aus - T. Aman were evaluated along with the check Boro -Fallow- T. Aman pattern. Among the six tested patterns Tomato-Mugbean-T. Aman gave the highest water productivity (11.2 kg/mm/ha). The pattern Wheat- Mugbean-T. Aman and Potato-T. Aus-T. Aman gave the water productivity of 9.1 and 7.6 kg/mm/ha, respectively. The pattern Lentil- T. Aus-T. Aman, Chickpea-T. Aus-T. Aman and Boro-Fallow-T. Aman showed the water productivity of 6.3, 6.2 and 5.5 kg/mm/ha, respectively. All the tested patterns except Tomato-Mugbean-T. Aman showed similar water productivity and the lower water productivity was observed in Boro-Fallow- T. Aman6.3, 6.2 and 5.5 kg/mm/ha.

Objectives:

i) To find out water requirement of different cropping patterns

ii) To find out the best cropping pattern in medium highland ecosystem

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at East Byde, BRRI Experimental Farm, Gazipur during, Kharif II-2013, Rabi 2013-14 and Kharif I-2014 season. Five cropping patterns viz., Tomato (BARI hybrid tomato-5)- Mungbean (BARI mug-6)- T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Wheat (BARI gom-26)-Mungbean (BARI mug-6)- T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Potato (BARI alu-7)-T. Aus (BRRI dhan48)- T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Lentil (BARI masur-7)-T. Aus (BRRI dhan48)- T. Aman (BRRI dhan49) and Chickpea ( BARI chola-9)- T. Aus (BRRI dhan48)- T. Aman (BRRI dhan49) were evaluated along with the check Boro (BRRI dhan29)-Fallow- T. Aman (BRRI dhan49) in RCB design with three replications. The seeding date was 27 Nov. 13, 18 Nov. 13, 19 Dec. 13, 19 Dec. 13, 19 Dec. 13 and 19 Dec. 13 for Boro, Tomato, Wheat, Potato, Lentil and Chickpea, respectively. The spacing was 25×15, 60×40, 20×Cont., 70×25, 20×Cont. and 25×Cont.for Boro, Tomato, Wheat, Potato, Lentil and Chickpea, respectively. Fertilizer (kg/ha): (N, P, K, S, Zn & B) was 138-19-60-20-4-0, 138-40-110-0-0-0, 92-32-23-21-3-1, 108-27-118-20-4-2, 23-18-20-0-0-0 and 23-25-35-20-3-1 for Boro, Tomato, Wheat, Potato, Lentil and Chickpea, respectively. Maturity date was 08 May 14, 21 March - 11 April 14, 30 March 1421 March 14, 06 April 14 and 20 April 14 for Boro, Tomato, Wheat, Potato, Lentil and Chickpea, respectively. Irrigation water applied in each plot with bucket and data were recorded. A simple economic analysis was done to evaluate the total productivity of these cropping patterns.

Achievement/Findings:

In cropping pattern CP₁, tomato and mungbean yielded 22.54 t/ha and 1.02 t/ha in Rabi and Kharif I season, respectively. The rice equivelant yield (REY) obtained from the CP₁ was 18.72 t/ha. In CP₂, wheat and mungbean yielded 2.44 and 1.09 t/ha in Rabi and T. Aus season, respectively. REY from CP₂ was 12.83 t/ha. In CP₃, the potato gave 13.20 t/ha yield in rabi season followed by BRRI dhan48 in T. Aus season(4.17 t/ha). CP₃ gave 16.77 t/ha REY. In CP₄, BARI masur-7 and BRRI dhan48 yielded 1.35 t/ha and 4.15 t/ha) in Rabi and T. Aus season, respectively. The REY of 13.81 t/ha was obtained from CP₄. In CP₅, chickpea gave 1.47 t/ha and BRRI dhan48 gave 4.16 t/ha grain yield in Rabi and T. Aus season, respectively. CP₅ gave the REY of 13.47 t/ha. REY of 11.12 t/ha was in CP₆. Among the different patterns, CP₁ gave the highest REY followed by CP₃. The lowest REY was observed in CP₆. The highest gross margin was obtained from CP₁and the lowest was obtained from the pattern CP₆. The highest productivity was in potato followed by tomato. The lowest water productivity was obtained from check Boro rice. The highest gross margin was obtained from tomato.
