Impact Assessment of Seed Production and Demonstration Program (spdp) on Quality Seed and Rice Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Adaptive Research Division of BRRI has undertaken demonstration program at farmers field to grow interest and expedite dissemination of new rice variety all over the country. Although the program has been started long ago, feedback from the farmers field not yet been known. So the study has been undertaken to evaluate the impact of SPDP on rice production. Two Upzilas namely; Bheramara and Kustia Sadar under Kustia and Batiagata and Fultala under Khulna district were selected purposively. A list of participated farmers and their mailing address was collected from Adaptive research Division, BRRI. In Khulna district demonstration trial was conducted for Boro season during the period of 2011 to 2013 and in Kustia, period of demonstration was last six years for three seasons. A total of 52 (21 participated and 31 non participated farmers) sample was collected from four Upazila (two Upazila from each district). Data was collected using pre-designed questionnaire with the help of SAAO both from the participated and non-participated farmers. Collected data were analyzed using simple tabular form. Findings of the study indicated that all types of farmers who were familiar with such type of demonstration earlier were included in SPD program. Variety selection was not quite accurate in Khulna as long duration and coarse grain varieties were demonstrated in this district. Farmers of Khulna district were not interested to preserve seed due to storage facility and availability of foundation seed in the market. Selection of appropriate variety, involvement of committed SAAOs can help to discriminate the new technology at farm level.

Objectives:

To assess the awareness/interest about the demonstrated rice varieties among the farmers.
To evaluate the contribution of SPDP for ensuring the availability of seeds to increase rice production
. To find out the role of program in expanding the BRRI rice variety in the locality.
To identify the problems of seed production at farmers level.

The study was conducted in Kustia and Khulna district where BRRI Adaptive research Division demonstrated different rice verities in Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons. Two Upzilas namey; Bheramara and KustiaSadar under Kustia and Batiagata and Fultala under Khulna district were selected purposively. Achievement/Findings:

Accurate variety selection is essential for popularizing new rice variety and seed production at farm level.As long duration and coarse grain varieties were demonstrated in this district and low amylose content BRRI dhan 55 was demonstrated in Kustia , farmers did not accept these varieties.. Farmers of Khulna district were not interested to preserve seed as foundation seed was available. The following recommendation were made for successful implementation of the program :

Selection of appropriate variety for farmers need and local adaptability;
Selection of real farmer with active involvement in farming;
Selection of committed /devoted SAAO for running the program ;
Discourage the use of foundation seed at farm level
