Validation of Improved Cropping Systems for Greater Kushtia

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different ecosystems were selected by the joint effort of researcher and extension personell in Chuadanga, Meherpur and Kushtia districts. Seven farmers in each block were selected for the improved cropping system demonstration to show the technological advantage of the improved systems over the existing system. In all blocks of Chuadanga proposed improved pattern resulted significantly higher rice equivalent yield (REY) compared to the farmers' practice. About 14-33% higher gross margin was attained from the evaluated cropping system over farmers' practice in Chuadanga. About 4-22% higher gross margin over farmers' practice was obtained from the evaluated cropping system in Chuadanga. Proposed improved pattern gave significantly higher REY compared to farmers' practices. Proposed improved pattern resulted a spiky increase in gross margin by 127%. About 57% higher gross margin of the improved system clearly indicates the economic advantage over the farmer’s practice. In this trial a high yielding jute variety Viz., O-9897 and a medium-duration T. Aman variety viz., BRRI dhan39 was evaluated in the system. Proposed cropping system resulted significantly higher REY compared to farmer’s practice. From economic analysis a sharp increase in gross margin by 98-154% was obtained with the proposed cropping system.

Objectives:

To increase the system productivity and income of the farmers through introduction of improved and intensified cropping systems.

Methodology:

Different ecosystems were selected by the joint effort of researcher and extension personnel in Chuadanga, Meherpur and Kushtia districts. Seven farmers in each block were selected for the improved cropping system demonstration to show the technological advantage of the improved systems over the existing system. Recommended management practices were followed for rice and non-rice crops. Famer’s existing cropping system data were collected from seven farmers in each ecosystem. In double rice cropping system farmers uses BRRI dhan28 in Boro season and Swarna in T. Aman season in Chuadanga. In the proposed cropping pattern Swarna has been replaced by short duration T. Aman variety BRRI dhan57. After harvesting of BRRI dhan57 a short duration mustard variety BARI sahrisha-14 was sown in the same land. BRRI dhan28 in Boro season and BRRI dhan39 in T. Aman season are dominant in double rice system of Meherpur. In the proposed cropping pattern BRRI dhan39 has been replaced by short duration T. Aman variety BRRI dhan57. A mustard crop BARI sahrisha-15 could easily be accommodated between these crops.In Meherpur district, potato was included in a double-rice cropping pattern where a long-duration Boro variety BRRI dhan29 and a medium-duration T. Aman variety BRRI dhan39 are cultivated in farmers' field. For better accommodation of potato long-duration Boro variety was replaced by short duration BRRI dhan28 and the medium-duration T. Aman variety was replaced by short-duration BRRI dhan57. The potato variety Cardinal was used in this trial. In Chuadanga most of the winter Rabi season maize is planted after the harvest of T. Aman rice. Currently farmers cultivate T. Aman rice cultivars that have a long development cycle (145-150 days, seed to seed). There are some shorter duration varieties with a slightly lower yield potential, but these rice varieties release the lands earlier that can be helpful to accommodate a pulse crop in between maize and rice. Obviously it will help to intensity the existing Maize-Fallow-T. Aman cropping system. On the other hand, early harvest will enable the Aman crop to avoid late season drought during maturity period. A field trial was conducted in Chuadanga including a modern variety of mungbean viz., BARI mug-6 in between maize and monsoon rice. In this trial a short duration variety of T. Aman rice viz., BRRI dhan57 was introduced to remove the local hybrid rice from the pattern. In Kushtia, Wheat-Jute-T. Aman is a major cropping pattern practiced since a long ago. Scarcity of rainfall and higher cost of groundwater irrigation discouraged the farmers to cultivate Boro rice. But now-a-days short spell of winter shows adverse effect on wheat yield. Moreover, Indian jute variety and Swarna in T. Aman season contribute lower productivity of the system. This situation compelled us to introduce pulse crop (BARI mosur-6) instead of wheat and imposing high yielding jute and rice variety in the system. In this trial a high yielding jute variety Viz., O-9897 and a medium-duration T. Aman variety viz., BRRI dhan39 was evaluated in the system.

Achievement/Findings:

The improved cropping pattern showed yield and economic advantages over the existing patterns in greater Kushtia region. The higher gross margin was attained from the evaluated cropping system over farmers' practice and proposed improved pattern resulted a spiky increase in gross margin. In addition, higher gross margin of the improved system clearly indicated the economic advantage over the farmer’s practice. Proposed cropping system resulted significantly higher REY compared to farmer’s practice.
