A validation trial was conducted with four improved cropping patterns viz., Potato (Diamont/Aesterix/Cardinal)-Boro (BRRI dhan28)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Potato (Diamont/Aesterix/Cardinal)-Boro (BRRI dhan55)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Potato (Diamont/Aesterix/Cardinal)-Maize (BARI hybrid maize5)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan57) and Wheat (BARI wheat26)-Mungbean (BARI mug6)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan57)  with the existing ones were conducted in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts. In Rangpur, rice equivalent yield (REY) was lower in proposed pattern compared to existing pattern  due to higher yield of local existing maize variety NK-40. REY was higher in proposed pattern compared to existing patern in Kurigram site. In Nilphamari, the REYs for improved cropping patterns and existing cropping patterns are 11.7 and 14.3 t/ha, respectively. In Lalmonirhat, the REYs for improved cropping patterns and existing cropping patterns were 24.7 and 22.7 t/ha, respectively.

  Validation
  1. To increase the total production the cropping patterns
  2.  To validate different cropping pattern in Northern region
  3. To diversify the rice based cropping patterns

Four cropping patterns viz., Potato (Diamant/Aesterix/Cardinal)-Boro (BRRI dhan28)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Potato (Diamant/Aesterix/Cardinal)-Boro (BRRI dhan55)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Potato (Diamant/Aesterix/Cardinal)-Maize (BARI hybrid bhutta5)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan57) and Wheat (BARI gom-26)-Mungbean (BARI mug-6)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan57) were demonstrated in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts. Initially cropping pattern survey was conducted in each location of four districts. Based on survey data one cropping pattern per location each in six farmers’ plots along with existing cropping pattern was evaluated to show the technological advantage of cropping patterns. The researcher oriented the selected farmers and concerned extension providers at block level with the technological package of selected cropping patterns. The advantages of the technology was discussed at least to the double number of farmers from the same villages and same number from the nearby blocks or villages through field day and farmers’ motivational tour during the maturity stage of each crop. The quality seeds of truthful level produced in the demonstration plots are being exchanged or sold to the interested farmers for further dissemination. The behavior of the scaling out of the technology is being monitored jointly by the researcher and the extension personnel.

In Rangpur, Rice equivalent yield (REY) was lower (21.9 t/ha) in proposed pattern compared to existing pattern (22.7) due to higher yield of local existing maize variety NK-40 (10t/ha). Although yield of BRRI dhan57 (3.6 t/ha) is lower compared to existing variety Sarna (4.6t/ha) but BRRI dhan57 is short durated compared to Sarna that increases the yield of potato after T. Aman. Due to lower REY gross margin decreased 7.9% in proposed pattern compared to existing pattern. The average grain yields of potato, BRRI dhan55 and BRRI dhan49 for improved cropping patterns are 28, 4.15, 4.9 t/ha, respectively.REY was higher (24.7 t/ha) in proposed pattern compared to existing patern (23.18 t/ha).  Substitution of jute by BRRI dhan55 increases the REY. Whereas BRRI dhan49 showed higher yield (4.9 t/ha) compared to BR11 (4.8t/ha). Table 99 shows that gross margin increased 18.12% in proposed pattern compared to existing pattern. In Rice-Wheat ecosystems the average grain yields of wheat, mungbean and rice for improved cropping patterns are 4, 0.8 and 4 t/ha, respectively in Nilphamari. The REYs for improved cropping patterns and existing cropping patterns are 11.7 and 14.3 t/ha, respectively. The wheat variety BARI gom-26 produced higher grain compared to existing variety. The recent mungbean variety, BARI mug-6, also gave high yield and the performance was very good. Yield of T. Aman rice was similar in both the patterns. But BRRI dhan57 is short durated compared to local variety. Economic analysis showed that instead of high REY in existing pattern compared to proposed cropping pattern, Wheat-Mungbean-T. Aman resulted much higher gross return and gross margin than the existing pattern. In Lalmonirhat the average grain yields of potato, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan49 for improved cropping patterns were 28, 5 and 5 t/ha, respectively. The REYs for improved cropping patterns and existing cropping patterns were 24.7 and 22.7 t/ha, respectively. Although BRRI dhan49 and BR11 gave same yield but BRRIdhan49 might be preferable than BR11 due to short duration. Economic analysis showed that Potato-DT Boro-T. Aman  resulted much higher gross return and gross margin than the existing pattern.
