Neutral Sulphite Anthraquinone (ns-aq) Pulping of Muli Bamboo (melocanna Baccifera)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Neutral sulphite (NS) anthraquinone (AQ) pulping of muli bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) was conducted in the laboratory. Normal NS and kraft pulping were also conducted for comparison. The total yield gain in NS-AQ process was 6 to 7.9% units more than that of the kraft control at kappa number 20. The kappa number could not be lowered below 32 in the normal NS pulping. The use of 0.1% AQ was sufficient to give the desired effect. The strength properties of unbleached NS-AQ pulps were lower than those of kraft pulps.

Objectives:

To study the response of muli bamboo in neutral sulphite anthraquinone (NS-AQ) pulping.

Methodology:

Mill-cut muli bamboo (M. baccifera) chips were collected from the Karnafully paper Mills, Chittagong, Bangladesh. The average dimensions of the chips were 25 x 7 x 3 mm. The chips were air-dried.Pulping experiments were carried out with air-dried chips equivalent to 250 g oven-dried chip in 2 L capacity stainless steel autoclaves heated in a temperature controlled air bath. Analytical grades of Na₂SO₃, Na₂CO₃, AQ and technical grade of NaOH were used. The following pulping parameters were maintained:

? Liquor to bamboo ratio, 4:1:

? Alkali ratio (for NS and NS-AQ) , 0.83;

? Rise of temperature from room temperature to 80°C in 30 min

and from 80 to 170°C in 60 min;

? Cooking at maximum temperature (170°C), 90 min

? Total alkali, 14-20% as NaOH in NS and NS-AQ; Active alkali, 14 -20% as NaOH in kraft.

Different stages of delignification were achieved by varying the amount of alkali at a particular dose of anthraquinone (AQ) as catalyst. The amount of AQ used in neutral sulphite (NS) cooks were 0.1 and 0.2% calculated on oven dry material. At the end of the cook, the autoclaves were removed and cooled as quickly as possible. The cooked material was washed and then disintegrated. Screening was done on a flat vibratory screen with 0.38 mm slot. The screened pulp was pressed to remove excess water and stored.The residual alkali in the black liquor was determined. The pulp yield and kappa number were determined. The screening rejects was calculated. The pulps were beaten to different freeness values in a PFI Mill (SCAN-C 24:67). The physical strength properties of the hand sheets made from the pulps were evaluated using SCAN-C 28:69 methods after conditioning the sheets at 50 ±2% relative humidity and 23 ±1°C.

Achievement/Findings:

Muli bamboo could be readily pulped by neutral sulphite anthraquinone process to produce pulps of kappa number about 20 with screened yield above 50%. There were 6.0 to 7.9% units gains in total yield in the NS-AQ process compared to the kraft process at the same degree of delignification. The use of 0.1% AQ in NS pulping was sufficient. The strength properties of unbleached NS-AQ pulps were lower than those of kraft pulps.
