Improvement of Existing Cropping Pattern by Replacing Local Aman Variety with Modern Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To replace local varieties with high yielding varieties, the experiment was conducted at Barisal FSRD site during 2013-14. Local T. Aman variety Sadamota was replaced by five modern T. Aman varieties viz., BR22, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan41, BRRI dhan46 and BRRI dhan49. Local improved cultivar ‘Bhojon’ was used in Boro season.The grain yield of all modern varieties were ranged from 3.39 to 4.68 t/ha and higher than the local T. Aman cultivar ‘Sadamota’ except BRRI dhan34. Grain yield of BRRI dhan34 was similar to local variety Sadamota. Yield advantage of other tested varieties was 24 to 35% higher compared to Sadamota. Gross margin was also higher in improved patterns than existing pattern.The pattern with variety BRRI dhan34 appeared as more profitable with the gross margin of Tk. 1,13,223 ha^-1 due it’s higher price. Farmers showed their interest to the new varieties due to their high yield and less disease infestation with desirable grain size.

Objectives:

To replace local varieties with high yielding varieties.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at Barisal FSRD site during 2013-14. Local T. Aman variety Sadamota was replaced by five modern T. Aman varieties viz., BR22, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan41, BRRI dhan46 and BRRI dhan49. Local improved cultivar ‘Bhojon’ was used in Boro season. Six farmers were selected for each replication in Chakhar, Dorikor and Boliarkathi village in Banaripara upazila, Barisal. Hence, the treatments were: Pattern 1: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (BR22), Pattern 2: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan34), Pattern 3: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan41), Pattern 4: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan46), Pattern 5: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan49), Existing pattern: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Average plot size was 0.13 ha for each variety. Date of seeding was 14-26 Dec, 15-27 June, 13-24 July, 25-30 June, 19-24 June, 28 June -05 July, 10-19 June, 2013 ad date of maturity was 20-25 May 2014, 8-21 Nov, 25 Nov -02 Dec, 23-30 Nov, 16-28 Nov, 9-20 Nov and 5 -25 Dec 2013 for Bhojon, BR22, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan41, BRRI dhan46, BRRI dhan49 and Sadamota, respectively.

Barisal region covers an area of tidal non-saline wetlands of about 1.9 million hectares under different land types. Famers of this area produce local Aman which is poor yielder. An initiative was taken to replace these local varieties with high yielding varieties. Grain yield of all modern varieties were ranged from 3.39 to 4.68 t/ha and higher than the local T.
