Improvement of Existing Cropping Pattern by Replacing Local Boro Variety with Modern Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Boro rice is one of the important crop in Barisal district. Farmers are using local varieties along with old varieties in Boro season. Yield performance of these varieties is low. Some modern varieties were included in this trial to increase system productivity. About 15 to 20% yield advantage was observed in improved cropping pattern over existing pattern. In 2013-14, highest pattern yield was found in pattern 4 involving Boro variety BRRI dhan29 and T. Aman variety Sadamota along with highest gross margin. Farmers preferred BRRI dhan47 due to it’s bold grain and the yield advantage. BRRI dhan28 was also preferred for it’s short growth duration. Introduction of improved cropping pattern by replacing local rice variety Bhojon with modern Boro (BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan50, BRRI dhan55, BRRI dhan58) varieties that increased 11- 299 % gross margin compared to existing pattern.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The trial was conducted in 3 villages viz., Chakhar, Dorikor and Boliarkathi of FSRD site Barisal during 2012-13 and 2013-14 following RCB design with six disperse replication. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan50, BRRI dhan55 and BRRI dhan58 were used in Boro season instead of local variety ‘Bhojon’. Six dispersed replication were in Chakhar, Dorikor and Boliarkathi village. The treatments were: Improved pattern 1: Boro (BRRI dhan28)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Improved pattern 2: Boro (BRRI dhan47)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Improved pattern 3: Boro (BRRI dhan50)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Improved pattern 4: Boro (BRRI dhan29)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Improved pattern 5: Boro (BRRI dhan55)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Improved pattern 6: Boro (BRRI dhan58)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota), Existing pattern: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota). The trial was initiated with pattern 1, pattern 2 and pattern 3 along with existing pattern during 2012-13. Rest of the patterns was included in 2013-14. The fertilizer rate for the high yielding Boro varieties was 260-300, 95, 120, 118, 12 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate respectively. The fertilizer rate for the high yielding Aman varieties was 150-195, 52, 82, 60 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP and gypsum, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield of all tested modern varieties were higher than ‘Bhojon’. Highest grain yield (5.88 t/ha) was found in BRRI dhan47 followed by BRRI dhan50 (5.83 t/ha) and BRRI dhan28 (5.54 t/ha). The total pattern yield was maximum in pattern 2 followed by pattern 3 and pattern 1 in 2012-13. Total gross margin of Pattern 2 was also higher (334%) than pattern 3 and pattern1 in 2012-13. About 15 to 20% yield advantage was observed in improved cropping pattern over existing pattern. In 2013-14, highest pattern yield was found in pattern 4 involving Boro variety BRRI dhan29 and T.
