Increasing Total Productivity Through Inclusion of Pulses and Oil Seed Crops in Fallow Period

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To increase total productivity, the trial was conducted in two consecutive years at the FSRD site, Barisal with six dispersed replications. Pattern 1, pattern 2 and pattern 3 along with existing pattern were initiated in 2012-13 while pattern 4 was initiated in 2013-14 with previous four patterns.The treatments were: Pattern 1: BARI mug-5-Fallow-Sadamota, Pattern 2: BARI mug-6-Fallow- RRI dhan44, Pattern 3: BARI sarisha-14-Fallow-BRRI dhan44, Pattern 4: BARI sarisha-14-BARI mug-5-BRRI dhan44, Existing pattern: Fallow-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota). BARI Sarisha-14 (Mustard), BARI Mug-5 and BARI Mug-6 were used in this trial. In T. Aman season, BRRI dhan44 was used instead of local cultivar ‘Sadamota’. Highest rice equivalent yield was found from pattern 3 (9.92 t/ha) followed by pattern 2 (9.66 t/ha) and pattern 1 (9.13 t/ha). Lowest REY was observed from existing pattern (3.59 t/ha). Total gross margin of pattern 2, pattern 3 and pattern 1 was 858, 759 and 543% higher respectively than existing pattern in 2012-13. Higher gross margin was observed in 2013-14 than 2012-13 in tested patterns. Farmers’ preferred mustard (BARI sarisha-14)-Mungbean (BARI mug-5)-T. Aman (BRRI dhan44) pattern due to its higher return.

Pattern 1, pattern 2 and pattern 3 along with existing pattern were initiated in 2012-13 while pattern 4 was initiated in 2013-14 with previous four patterns. Unit plot size was 0.20 ha. The treatments were: Pattern 1: BARI mug-5-Fallow-Sadamota, Pattern 2: BARI mug-6-Fallow- RRI dhan44, Pattern 3: BARI sarisha-14-Fallow-BRRI dhan44, Pattern 4: BARI sarisha-14-BARI mug-5-BRRI dhan44, Existing pattern: Fallow-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota). BARI Sarisha-14 (Mustard), BARI Mug-5 and BARI Mug-6 were used in this trial. In T. Aman season, BRRI dhan44 was used instead of local cultivar ‘Sadamota’. Date of seeding, transplanting, weeding, fertilizer application and harvesting as well as yield data were recorded.
