Intensification the Productivity of Single Boro Cropping Pattern Through Rice + Fish Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

More than five times higher rice equivalent yield was obtained due to inclusion of fish than existing pattern in 2012-13. Gross margin was 333-465% higher than existing single Boro system. Farmers were very pleased with the production and benefit and showed interest to continue.

Objectives:

To Intensify the productivity of single Boro cropping pattern through Rice + Fish culture

Methodology:

There are some low lands with single Boro rice in Barisal region. This type of land has the potentiality of fish cultivation that can increase the systems productivity significantly. The trial was conducted at Barisal FSRD site in four dispersed replication in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Each farmer was considered as replication. The patterns were: Boro (Bhojon)-Fallow-Fallow and Boro (BRRI dhan47)-Fallow-Fish (Carp). Date of seeding, transplanting, weeding, fertilization and harvesting as well as yield data were also recorded. Cultivation and fertilization practices were followed according to BRRI recommendation. Liming, fertilization, feeding were done according to DoF recommendation. Seed, fertilizer and insecticide were provided by the project. Manpower and other supports were provided by the farmers. Fingerlings and their rearing technologies were provided by the project and feed was provided by the farmers.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield for BRRI dhan47 was 0.37-2.98 t/ha higher than local variety ‘Bhojon’. Fish production was 0.97 t/ha. More than five times higher rice equivalent yield (REY) was obtained (24.26 t/ha) due to inclusion of fish than existing pattern (4.40 t/ha) in 2012-13. Gross margin was 333-465% higher than existing single Boro system. Farmers were very pleased with the production and benefit and showed interest to continue.
