Direct and Residual Effects of Liming on Soil Ph and Seed Cotton Yield in an Acidic Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted during 4 consecutive cotton growing seasons from 1985-86 to 1988-89 to study tile direct and residual effects of liming on soil pH and seed cotton yield in the acidic Red Brown Terrace Soil of Sreepur. Liming (with CaO) at 3 rates (2. 4 and 6 t/ ha) was done 3 weeks before plantation of 1st. crop and succeeding 3 crops were grown without lime keeping the layout unchanged. Dose of N 120 P 120 K 120 S 20 Zn 5 kg h/a was applied in each plot for every crop. Fertilization without lime caused soil acidification lowering the soil pH by 0.20 units in 4 years. Liming at different rates initially raised pH to different levels which were again decreased gradually in the succeeding years. During 1st. crop. the seed cotton yields of different liming rates were statistically identical (1.90. 2.05 and 2.10 t/ ha), but were remarkably higher than that obtained without lime (only 0.68 t/ha), Such a distinct yield advantage of liming persisted up to 3rd crop. During 4th crop. plots without lime as well as with lime at different rates produced similar seed cotton yields (0.60. 0.65. 0.65. 0.72 t/ha) indicating residual effects of liming. It was usually recommended to apply optimum fertilizer dose [or each crop with lime 2 t/ha after every 3 years for obtaining higher seed cotton yield in the experimental soil.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to study the direct and residual effects of liming on soil pH and seed-cotton yield thereby optimizing the liming rate
and relimlng interval for achieving· sustainable seed-cotton yield in the acidic Red Brown Terrace Soil

Methodology:

The experimental soil a Red Brown Terrace, was developed on the geological substratum, Madhupur clay, of late tertiary origin, called 'Orthi-Ferric-Alisols'. Initial soil sample (from 0-30 cm depth) was analyzed following the method described by Hunter (1984). The treatments comprised 4 rates: of liming (with CaO. viz , no liming: liming @ 2 t/ha:, liming @ 4 t/ha: liming @ 6 t /ha. Randomized complete block design was followed with 5 replications. Lime was applied 3 weeks before planting the 1st crop (1985-86) and the succeeding 3 crops (1986-87, 1987 -88 and 1988-89) were grown without. lime keeping the lay-out unchanged. All the plots received a blanket application of 120 kg N. 120 kg, P₂0₅_. 120 kg K₂0, 20 kg S and 5 kg Zn/ha every year. in the form of urea, triple super-phosphate, muriate of potash. gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

It was concluded from the present study that fertilization without lime could cause further acidification of the acidic Red Brown Terrace Soil under study. Liming is indispensable for higher seed cotton yield. The rate. 2 t CaO/ha may be sufficient. Reliming would be necessary after every 3 years
