Year Round Vegetables Production in ‘sorjan’ Bed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the southern region of Bangladesh, especially in tidal prone submerged area, cultivation of vegetables is difficult compared to other areas of Bangladesh. In this area, usually farmers did not cultivate vegetables commercially. Almost every farmer has interest to produce vegetables for their own consumption. Considering these situations, this program was initiated to increase the vegetable production. Average return per ha form summer vegetables under Sorjan system was Tk. 2,34,403. For winter vegetables, return per ha ranged from Tk. 4,58,185 to 7,44,458. Among winter vegetables, highest returns were from bottle gourd and lowest was from radish. Total returns were Tk. 1,37,488 in which 76.81% come from selling vegetables. Total production cost for winter vegetables was Tk. 1,09,915 per ha and gross margin was Tk. 5,69,276 per ha. Total fish production was 1,126.4 kg, among which 881 kg, 35.5 kg and 209.9 kg were sold, distributed and consumed, respectively. Total returns were Tk. 1,88,481 among which 76.33% comes from selling fish.

Objectives:

To improve family income and livelihoods.

Methodology:

Four cooperator farmers were selected for year round vegetables production in ‘Sorjan’ method. In ‘Sorjan’ method, range of bed was 7 to 11. Eleven summer vegetables seed namely, Indian spinach, ladies finger, bitter gourd, yard long bean, cucumber, stem amaranth, wax gourd, ribbed gourd, pumpkin and pat shak were distributed in summer during February, 2013. Thirteen winter vegetables seed namely bottle gourd, spinach, red amaranth, tomato, papaya, pumpkin, radish, batisak, brinjal, turnip, bean, cabbage and cauliflower were distributed during October, 2013.

Achievement/Findings:

Average return per ha form summer vegetables under Sorjan system was Tk. 2,34,403. For winter vegetables, return per ha ranged from Tk. 4,58,185 to 7,44,458. Production from lady’s finger was highest (200 kg). Total returns were Tk. 14,240 among which 64.75% come from selling vegetables. Total production cost for summer vegetables per hectare was Tk.67,678 and gross return was Tk. 2,25,428. On the other hand, in winter vegetable, both total variable cost and gross margin per hectare were higher. Among winter vegetables, highest returns were from bottle gourd and lowest was from radish. Total returns were Tk. 1,37,488 in which 76.81% come from selling vegetables. Total production cost for winter vegetables was Tk. 1,09,915 per ha and gross margin was Tk. 5,69,276 per ha. For fish production in shallow water, production of carp fishes was highest (880 kg). Total fish production was 1,126.4 kg, among which 881 kg, 35.5 kg and 209.9 kg were sold, distributed and consumed, respectively. Total returns were Tk. 1,88,481 among which 76.33% comes from selling fish. Farmers are very much interested in year round vegetable production in sorjan system due to increased availability, scope of consumption and higher income from vegetables production round the year.
