Fish Culture in ‘sorjan’ Ditch

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To improve family income and livelihoods, four farmers were selected at Chakhar and Doricor of FSRD site, Barisal during 2012-13. Carp species, Shing, Magur, Telapia, Koi were distributed among the selected farmers. High value fish (Shing, Magur, Koi) and Telapia were solely released in ‘Sorjan’ ditches while carp species (Rui, Katla, Mrigel, Sorputi, Silver carp, Common carp) and Telapia were allowed as mixed culture in Sorjan ditch. Freshwater prawn of 300 pieces was also released in the same ditch as observational trial. Introduction of high value fish species viz. Magur, Shing and Koi in Sorjan system appeared as potential and profitable technology. Among the high value fishes, Magur ranked top position with the gross margin of Tk. 3,00,148 – 3,50,781 per ha.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Four farmers were selected at Chakhar and Doricor of FSRD site. Carp species, Shing, Magur, Telapia, Koi were distributed among the selected farmers. Growth performance, production and economic return were recorded. Newly ‘Sorjan’ beds were prepared manually. Recommended management practices viz. liming, basal fertilization before seven days of stocking and feeding were followed. One week after basal fertilization all the ‘Sorjan’ beds were stocked on 07 July 2013. High value fish (Shing, Magur, Koi) and Telapia were solely released in ‘Sorjan’ ditches while carp species (Rui, Katla, Mrigel, Sorputi, Silver carp, Common carp) and Telapia were allowed as mixed culture in Sorjan ditch. Freshwater prawn of 300 pieces was also released in the same ditch as observational trial. A ‘Sorjan’ ditch was stocked for Carp species. Stocking density of Carp species was 40/40.48 m²; Shing, Magur, Koi and Telapia were 250/40.48 m². All fishes were harvested on 21-30 January 2014.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum fish production was found from the Carp species (3011 kg/ha) followed by Telapia (1853 kg/ha). Among the high value fish, Magur gave the highest production (1112 kg/ha) followed by Koi (1050 kg/ha) and Shing (803 kg/ha). The highest gross margin was found from Magur culture (Tk. 3,25,469 per ha) followed by Shing (Tk. 2,10,598 per ha), Carp (Tk. 2,04,309 per ha), and Koi (Tk. 108696 per ha). Telapia gave the lowest gross margin. Farmers showed interest in high value fish culture in ‘Sorjan’ ditch.
