Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fallow -T. Aus - T. Aman cropping pattern is the major cropping pattern of Habiganj FSRD site. In this pattern, there are no crops in Rabi season due to shortage of irrigation facilities. For this reason, system productivity is comparatively low. Thus, an attempt was initiated to increase the systems productivity by inclusion of fruits or vegetables that require less water compare to rice.Khira-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern gave higher REY (14.59 t/ha) and gross margin than existing pattern (Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman). Water melon field was partially affected by hail storm and that was the cause of low REY in this pattern. Both improved pattern involving Khira and water melon showed much higher REY than existing Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern.

Objectives:

To increase the systems productivity by inclusion of fruits or vegetables that require less water compare to rice.

Methodology:

To increase the systems productivity by inclusion of fruits or vegetables that require less water compare to rice, the study was conducted at FSRD site Jagatpur, Habiganj Sadar in six dispersed farmers’ fields during 2012-13 and 2013-14. Each farmer’s field was considered as one replication. Three patterns were: i) Water melon-T. Aus-T. Aman, ii) Khira-T. Aus-T. Aman and iii) Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman (existing) were evaluated in each dispersed farmer’s field. The varieties were BRRI dhan46 for T. Aman, Diana for water melon and century for Khira.

Achievement/Findings:

In 2012-13, range of rice equivalent yield (REY) of water melon-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern, Khira-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern and Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman patterns were 12.42 t/ha, 9.83 t/ha and 9.71 t/ha, respectively. Khira crop fully damaged due to severe virus infection which resulted low REY of Khira-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern. In 2013-14, REY of water melon-T. Aus-T. Aman, Khira- T. Aus-T. Aman and Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern. Khira-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern gave higher REY (14.59 t/ha) and gross margin than existing pattern (Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman). Water melon field was partially affected by hail storm and that was the cause of low REY in this pattern. Both improved pattern involving Khira and water melon showed much higher REY than existing Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman pattern. Farmers showed interest in Khira and water melon cultivation due to higher income.
