The inoculation effect of Bradyrhizobium japonicum was assessed on nodulation, growth and yield of five soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) varieties during rabi season of 1995-96 under field conditions. The soybean varieties used in the study were PH-I, Hill, Super, Hyper and Bragg. The seeds were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain RGm-910, while the uninoculated seeds were considered as control. Data on nodule number and weight and leaf and stem weight were recorded at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after emergence (DAE) and grain yield at harvest. Inoculation with Bradyrhizobium increased nodule numbers and dry weights, leaf and stem dry weights as well as grain yield of all the varieties. Irrespective of varieties, the number of nodules increased till 80 DAE and then remained plateau, while the nodule dry weight increased up to 90 DAE. The variety 'Hill' showed the best performance among the varieties.

To investigate the effect of Bradyrhizobium inoculation on nodulation and yield of five soybean varieties.

A field experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricaultral University (Former IPSA), Gazipur-1703, during the rabi season of 1995-96 to study the effect of bradyrhizobial inoculation on nodulation, growth and yield of five soybean varieties. The texture of the soil was silty clay having 0.06% total nitrogen and 0 . 75% organic C (Chisim, 1997). The pH and CEC of the soil were 5.7 and 11.69 meq/100g soil, respectively. The land was properly prepared two days before sowing the seeds. Well decomposed cowdung @ 20 t/ha as well as 20 kg/ha urea, 130 kg/ha TSP and 120 kg/ha MP were applied during the final land preparation. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having two factors-inoculation and variety. Five varieties of soybean (viz. PB-l, Hill, Super, Hyper and Bragg) were used in the experiment. The seeds were collected from the Soil Science Department of the University. Peat based Bradyrhizobiumjaponium (Strain RGm- 910) inoculum was collected from the Soil Science Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur. Fifty percent of the total soybean seeds of each variety were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain RGm-910 and rest seeds were kept uninoculated. Seeds were inoculated with peat based inoculant @1.5g inoculant per 100g seed. Care was taken to avoid any contamination. Seeds were sown carefully in the afternoon. About 90% seeds were found germinated after seven days. The plants were monitored regularly. Irrigation, weeding and insecticides were applied as and when needed. Data on nodule number and dry weight, leaf and stem dry weights were recorded at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after emergence (DAE) and grain yield at harvest. During the sampling times the plants were uprooted very carefully with the help of a spade so that no nodules were feft in the soil. The nodules were separated from the roots for counting. The plant (above ground portion) and nodules were dried in an oven at 70°C for 48 hours and measured their weights. The plants were harvested at its maturity in april 1996. The seeds were air-dried before weighing. Analysis of collected data was performed following the MSTATC program and means were compared following the Duncan's new multiple range test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
