Karimgonj upazila is situated in the mid northern part of Kishoregonj district. It lies under the AEZ 9 (Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain) and AEZ 21(Sylhet Basin). In this upazila major land type recognized was highland comprising 31.1% of total area followed by medium highland comprising 23.2% of the total area. Major textural class also identified were clay(32.9%) and loam(32.1%) followed by clay loam 18.6%. Eleven soil groups were identified namely Sonatola, Silmondi, Lokdeo, Ghatail and Balina in Old Brahmaputra Floodplain and Balagonj, Guainghat, Kanairghat, Fagu, Sulla, Therchibari in Surma-Kusiyara Floodplain of the upazila. Sonatola soils cover the major part (27.5%) of the upazila.
According to local agro-ecology suitable crops identified were Jute(Deshi, Tosha), Boro(Adhunik), Aus(Adhunik), T.Aman(Adhunik, Local), Sugarcane, Deep Water Aman, Wheat, Maize(robi and kharip), Groundnut(robi and kharip), Mustard, Robi Soybean, Chilli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Brinjal, Lentil, Gram, Mango, Jackfruit and Coconut. Eight major cropping pattern namely Whole the year round crop(Sugarcane), Robi Vegetable-Kharip Vegetables, Boro-Fallow-T.Aman, Fallow-Jute-T.Aman, Robi crops-Fallow-T.Aman, Robi Crops-Jute-T.Aman, Boro-Jute-T.Aman, Boro-Fallow-Fallow were identified among which Boro-Fallow-T.Aman covers the major part (35.5%). Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops is given in the guide.The guide can be used for determining flood and drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion affected area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
