Characterization and Evaluation of Rice Germplasm Accessions During 2009-10.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In T. Aman, 22 entries/accessions had short (<125 days), 28 medium (125-135 days) and 145 long (>135 days) growth duration. One hundred and one (101) germplasm had long (>25 cm), 81 moderate (20-25 cm) and the rest (13) were short (<20 cm) panicle length. Besides, 33 accessions had higher (>30 g), 88 moderate (25-30 g) and the rest (74) had low (<25 g) 1000 grain weight. The highest yield (19.55 g) was observed in Ranga Jabra (acc. 1165). During Boro season, 50 accessions had short (<135 days), 89 medium (135-150 days) and 23 long (>150 days) growth duration. Thirty five (35) germplasm had higher (>25 cm) panicle length and rest were moderate to small length. Besides, 40 accessions had higher (>25 g), 62 medium (20-25 g) and remaining (60) were low (<20 g) 1000 grain weight, in which Burma Biroin (acc. 4401) had the lowest (10 g) and IR 19660-11 (acc. 3840) had the highest (30.20 g). The highest yield per hill (28.70 g) was obtained from Gopisail (acc.4386). The variety having higher yield would be utilized in crossing program if other characters satisfy the breeder.

Objectives:

To characterize and evaluate the stored as well as new collection of rice germplasm.

Methodology:

Agro-morphological characterization of germplasm accessions is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs (Lin, 1991). Adequate characterization for agronomic and morphological traits is necessary to facilitate utilization of germplasm by breeders (Upadhyaya et al., 2008). A total of 357 germplasm accessions in which 195 accessions in T. Aman 2009 and 162 in Boro 2009-10 were characterized on the bases of 45 morpho-agronomic traits. Single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 X 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively were grown under transplanted condition using single row of 5.4 m long per entry. Fertilizers were applied @ 60:20:40 kg NPK/ha in T. Aman and @ 80:20:40 kg NPK/ha in Boro seasons, respectively. Appropriate control measures were taken for insect pests, diseases and weeds when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

In T. Aman, 25 germplasm had short (<110 cm), 39 moderate (110-130 cm) and rest (131) were long (>130 cm) plant height. Maximum (85) varieties had higher (>15) and moderate (10-15) number of tiller and effective tiller, respectively. Maximum (109) varieties showed medium (3-5), 75 were higher (>5) and the rest (11) were small (<3) grain length breadth ratio. During Boro season, 20 germplasm had shorter (<80 cm), 40 moderate (80-100 cm) and rest (102) were long (>100 cm) plant height. Maximum (80 and 103) varieties possessed medium (10-15) number of tiller and effective tiller, respectively. Maximum (82) varieties showed higher (>4) and 80 showed medium (2-4) grain length breadth ratio. The grain weight of rice is believed to be a maternally inherited character. Therefore, the accessions having higher 1000-grain weight (GW) could be used as a parent for rice hybrid development. The rest accessions would be used as parental sources for breeding program with respective objective(s).
