Response of Stem Amaranth of Different Levels of Nutrients

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on amaranth was conducted to find out the optimum dose of N, P, K and S for maximizing the yield of amaranth during the kharif season of 2014 at central farm of BARl, Gazipur. Treatments comprising four levels ofN (0,30, 60 & 90 kg ha^-1), P (0, 10, 20 & 30 kg ha^-1), K (0, 15, 30 & 45 kg h^-1) and S (0, 5, 10 & 15 kg ha^-1) were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The combined effect of NP KS significantly increased yield and yield attributes of amaranth. The highest edible yield of 36.33 t ha^-1 was obtained from T3 (N₆₀P₂₀K₃₀S₁₀ kg ha^-1) treatment at Gazipur. From the regression analysis, it can be concluded that nitrogen 60 kg, phosphorous 26 kg, potassium 27 kg and sulphur 6.39 kg per hectare of land was found optimum for amaranth production.

Objectives:

To develop a suitable fertilizer package for amaranth cultivation in our country.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the BARI, Gazipur during kharif season of 2014 with the amaranth var, BARI data 1. The initial soil samples of the experimental field were collected and analyzed following standard methods. The fourteen treatments in combination with four levels ofN (0, 30, 60 & 90 kg ha^-1); four levels of P (0, 10, 20 & 30 kg ha^-1); four levels ofK (0,15, 30 & 45 kg ha^-1) and four levels of S (0, 5, 10 & 15 kg ha^-1) were used. The sources of N, P, K and S were Urea, TSP, MOP and Gypsum, respectively. TSP, MP and Gypsum fertilizers were incorporated in soil during final land preparation. Top dressing of N in the form of urea was applied at 25 April, 2014 and 2 May, 2014. Land was prepared in wet condition (Puddling) by 4-5 ploughing followed by laddering. Seed wing was done on 30 March, 2014 in 1.6m x 2m plots following RCB design with three replications. Data was recorded from 1 m² selected plots. The yield per plot was recorded and based on that per hectare yield was calculated. The data were analyzed by computer using MSTAT-C Package while the mean separation was done by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Steel and Torrie, 1960). Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode (Jakson, 1958). Organic carbon determination by wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black). Total N was determined by modified Kjeldahl method. Ca and Mg were determined by NH₄OAc extraction method. K, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined by DTPA extraction followed by AAS reading. Boron was determined by CaCh extraction method. Phosphorus was determined by Bray and Kurtz method (Acid soils) and Modified Olsen method (Neutral + Calcareous soils). S was determined by CaH₄(PO₄)2.H₂O extraction followed by turbidimetric turbidity method with BaCl₂.

Achievement/Findings:

From above result, it could be concluded that the fertilizer doses used in T₃ treatment @ N₆₀P₂₀K₃₀S₁₀ kg ha^-1 gave the highest yield in stem amaranth at Gazipur region. The regression analysis indicates that N₆₀P₂₅K₂₅S₆ kg ha^-1 was found economically cost effective.
