Performance of Four Deshi Jute Varieties/ Genotype in Rangpur Region Under Research and Farmers' Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were conducted at research station and farmers' field with one advanced line, C-443 and three varieties namely CVL-1, Atompat-38 and Binadeshipat-2 to evaluate the growth and yield performance in Rangpur region of Bangladesh under T. Aman-Potato-Jute cropping pattern . Results revealed that Binadeshipat-2 showed the highest fibre yield and CVL-1 showed lower fibre yield among the four tested varieties/genotype at research station and farmer's fields at both the locations for existing cropping pattern at Rangpur region.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth and yield performance in Rangpur region of Bangladesh under T.aman-potato-jute cropping pattern .

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at the BINA research farm (high inputs with proper cultural management practices) and the farmer's field (low inputs with farmer's management practices) of Rangpur district during Kharif-1 season of 1999. Three released deshi jute varieties viz. CVL-1, Atompat-38 and Binadeshipat-2 and one advanced deshi jute genotype viz. C-443 were taken to evaluate the yield performances. The experimental design was completely randomized with four and three replications at research and farmer's field, respectively. The unit plot size was 5m x 3m for research farm and 5m x 5m for farmers field. Seed sowing was done on April 12 and April 5 (after potato harvest) for the research and farmer's field, respectively. Seeds were sown in line 30 cm apart and the seed rate was 8 Kg/ha. Recommended cultural practices (fertilizers, weeding, irrigation, pesticide, etc.) were followed to ensure normal growth of plants. Data on various plant parameters were collected from the experiments following the standard techniques. Fresh weight, stick weight and fibre yield were recorded from unit plot and converted into tons per hectare. Collected data were analyzed statistically according to Zaman et al. (1982) and means were separated by DMRT for interpretation of the results.

From the above results, it appeared that among the four tested varieties/genotype, Binadeshipat-2 may prove to be suitable cultivars of T.Aman- Potato - Jute cropping pattern based lands at Ranpur region.
