An experiment with three lentil genotypes of e.g. E5M-1018, N 5M-573 and N2M-214 and a check cultivar Barimasur-4 was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh to evaluate their performance under four soil moisture levels of 60, 50, 40 and 30% field capacity (FC). The highest plant height, higher number of branches per plant, maximum number of pods per plant, maximum number of seeds per plant, largest 100-seed weight and total dry matter per plant were found in the moisture level of 60% FC. The highest seed yield per plant was obtained from the 60% FC which was followed by 50, 40 and 30% FC. The mutant N 5M-573 showed the best performance among the genotypes.

The experiment was conducted in plastic pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during November to February 2001. The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 6.8. The collected soil was dried in the sun. A total of 64 pots were prepared with 4 kg soils in each pot and were placed under polyethylene sheet. N-P205-K20 @ 30-90-40 kg ha- 1 were applied as urea, TSP and MP, respectively. Urea was applied in three equal splits. One third of the urea, entire quantity of TSP and MP were added on the day of final pot preparation. Second dose of urea was applied as top dressing at 30 DAS and third dose at 45 DAS. Seeds of three mutant lines namely E5M-1018, N5M-573 and N2M-214 and the check cultivar Barimasur-4 were sown on 21 November 2000 . Five to seven seeds were sown per pot at 10 cm spacing. The soils of the pots were kept well moist by applying water upto 50% field capacity to ensure proper germination. After germination three healthy seedlings per pot were retained for the experiment The experiment consisted of four genotypes and four soil moisture levels . The soil moisture levels were T1-60% FC (control) , T2 - 50% FC , T3 - 40% FC and T4-30% FC. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD), where each treatment was replicated 4 times. Before stress imposition, all the pots were maintained at equal moisture level of 100% FC. Field capacity of the soils used in the experiment was measured following gravimetric method. These measured amount of water was multiplied by 0.60, 0.50, 0.40 and 0.30 to determine the amount of water to maintain 60% FC , 50% FC and 30%FC, respectively. These treatments were applied at 40 days after sowing and continued up to maturity. Intercultural operation such as weeding was done when necessary. All the plants of 64 pots (4 moisture levels x 4 genotypes x 4 replications) were harvested. The date of harvest was determined when 70-80% of the pods became green to brown colour. Plant height, primary branch per plant and secondary branch per plant were recorded. After separating the grains from the plants, all the plant parts were oven dried at 700C for 3 days. Then number of filled pods and unfilled pods per plant, seeds per plant, 100-seed weight, yield per plant, total dry matter per plant and harvest index were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Freed, 1992). The mean differences among the treatments, were compared following Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.
