Studies in Anatomical Properties of Helicia Excels Blume and Vernonia Arborea Buch.-ham. from Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper describes the gross and minute anatomical properties of Helicia excels Blume (Proteaceae) and Vernonia arborea Buch.-Ham. (Compositae). It also provides their probable uses based on anatomical properties.

Objectives:

i) To determine the detail gross and minute anatomical features of Helicia excels Blume and Vernonia arborea Buch.-Ham. species from Bangladesh.

ii) To develop a database on anatomical properties of these species for determining better utilization.

Methodology:

Logs of H. excels and V. arborea were collected from forests and preserved in the Xylarium of Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong. Four centimeter thick discs of these woods were cut for anatomical studies. Small wood blocks representing true cross, radial and tangential surfaces were cut from three different zones viz. sapwood, heartwood and near the pith. The wood blocks were boiled in distilled water till these were softened and preserved in 70% alcohol for microtome sectioning. The permanent slides, both unstained and stained with Delafields Hematoxylin, were made by following the standard procedures. The gross features were studied with naked eye and hand lens of 10×. Minute anatomy was studied from the permanent slides. The recommended terminology and procedures by IAWA Committee were followed in describing and determining qualitative values. For fibre analysis woods were macerated following the procedure described by Franklin. The macerated fibres were thoroughly washed in running water and temporary slides were made staining with safranin. Splinter burning tests were made following the procedures of IAWA Committee.

Achievement/Findings:

Anatomical studies of H. excels reveal that the wood was yellowish brown to reddish brown, medium coarse textured, moderately hard and moderately heavy, with broad ray flacks (ribbon stripes) on radial surface and boat shaped broad rays on tangential surface. These anatomical features make the wood suitable for medium grade furniture and decorative veneer.This species was not suitable for pulping due to its dark colour; presence more ray and parenchyma cells than fibre cells, septa like partition in some fiber cells, moderately short fibers and higher number of pores in the wood. Brown to yellowish brown colour, moderately open pores, straight grain, moderately fine to fine texture, soft to moderate hardness of V. arborea wood make it suitable for match sticks and boxes, low grade furniture, turnery works, shoe heels, toys etc.
