Studies on Selection Criteria and Genetic Divergence of T. Aman Germplasm During 2009-10.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 58 T. Aman rice varieties were studied for 13 morpho-agronomic characters. The germplasm were grouped into nine (9) clusters on the basis of D² analysis. Maximum entries (13) were grouped into the cluster III and the lowest (two) in cluster I. The intra-cluster distances ranged from 0.602 in cluster VII to 1.555 in cluster I. The D² value ranged from 3.281 to 13.006 indicating a high degree of genetic diversity among the genotypes. The inter-cluster distances ranged from 13.0 between cluster I and IV to 3.28 between cluster III and V. The highest 1000 grain weight and yield per hill along with the lowest unfilled grain number were found in cluster VIII. The lowest flag leaf length, plant height, days to maturity and the lowest filled grain number were found in Cluster I. It was apparent from the table that maximum good characters were accumulated in cluster VIII. Therefore, the genotypes under cluster I with cluster VIII, might be selected for future breeding program depending upon the objectives. Finally it can be concluded that wider diversity was presented among the studied genotypes for developing new varieties.

Objectives:

To estimate genetic variability, character associations and genetic relationships of T. Aman rice germplasm.

Methodology:

A total of 58 T. Aman rice varieties collected from different districts of Bangladesh were grown for genetic diversity study. Single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 X 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively were transplanted in row of 5.4 m long plot for each entry in three replications. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:60:40 Kg NPK/ha. Control measures for pests, diseases and weed were taken whenever necessary. Thirteen morpho-agronomic and yield contributing data viz. flag leaf length (cm), flag leaf width (cm), plant height (cm), days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, panicle length (cm), filled grains/panicle, unfilled grains/panicle, grain length (mm), grain breadth (mm), length-breath ratio, 1000 grain weight (g) and yield/hill (g) were recorded to study the diversity. Mahalonobis’ D² and Canonical Vector Analysis methods were used to group the varieties based on their yield contributing characters using GENSTAT 5.13 program in computer.

The germplasm were grouped into nine (9) clusters on the basis of D² analysis. Maximum entries (13) were grouped into the cluster III, followed by ten in cluster IV, seven in clusters V and VI, six in clusters VIII and IX, four in cluster II and two in cluster I, respectively. The intra-cluster distances ranged from 0.602 in cluster VII to 1.555 in cluster I. The cluster IV showed maximum (13.006) genetic distance with cluster I. Similarly, moderated inter cluster distances were observed in cluster II, IV and VIII, with most of the clusters. The minimum inter cluster divergence was observed between III and V (3.281) followed by III and VIII (3.568) and III and VI (3.575) indicating that the genotypes of these clusters were genetically more closed then from the rest. The highest flag leaf width, plant height and panicle length were found in cluster II and the highest 1000 grain weight and yield per hill along with the lowest unfilled grain number were found in cluster VIII. The lowest flag leaf length, plant height, days to maturity and the lowest filled grain number were found in Cluster I.
