Performance of Rapeseed and Mustard Varieties /mutants in Rangpur Region Under Farmers' Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were conducted at farmers' fields under T. aman- Mustard- Boro cropping pattern of Rangpur Sadar and Pirghasa Upazilla, Rangpur during 1999-2000- 2001 cropping seasons to evaluate the performance of 11 mutants/ varieties viz. MM-19, MM-20, Agrani, Safal, Binasarisa-3, Binasarisa-4, Barisarisa-6 , Barisarisa-7, Bari sarisa -8, Barisaris a-9 and Tori-7. Results revealed that Barisarisa-8 had the highest seed yield (1.91 t/ha) compared to other mutants and varieties. This variety however , had no significant difference with Binasarisa-3, Binasarisa-4 and MM-20. Tori-7 had sown the lowest yield (1.21 t/ha) but matured the earliest (80 days) among the tested mutants/varieties. Considering days to maturity , Barisarisa-9 may be introduced in the above cropping pattern because of its similar crop duration but 10% higher yield than Tori-7.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield performance of newly released rape seed and mustard varieties/advanced mutants with the existing varieties and to select the suitable ones for Rangpur region.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted at Rangpur Sadar and Pirghacha Upazilla of Rangpur district representing Tista Meander Floodplain, during 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 cropping seasons. Two advanced mutants viz . MM-19 and MM-20 and eight recently released varieties viz. Agrani, Safal, Binasarisha-3, Binasarisha-4 , Barisarisha-6, Barisarisha-7, Barisarisha-9 and one local cultivar viz. Tori-7 were undertaken to evaluate their performance. All varieties/mutants except Barisarisha- 9 were grown in each location in a randomized complete block design with three replications and the unit plot size was 5m x 4m . Barisarisha-9 included only in the cropping season of 2000-2001 as it was released in the year 2000. Seeds were sown (after T.aman harvest) in Rabbi season (November 14 and 21 of 1999 and 2000, respectively) usually practiced by the farmers. Seeds were sown in line, 30 cm apart at the rate of 9 kg/ha. Recommended cultural practices (fertilization, weeding , irrigation, pesticide, etc.) were followed to ensure normal growth of the plants (Rashid et al, 1999). Data on yield components were taken from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot and seed yields were taken from the whole plot and converted into tons/hectare. The recorded data were analyzed statistically and means were separated by Duncun's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

The results suggest that in case of yield performances, the varieties Barisarisha-8, Binasarisha-3, Binasarisha-4 and the mutant MM-20 could be suitable cultivars under farmers' management practices at Rangpur region. In order to improve the existing cropping pattern (T.aman - mustard- boro ), Barisarisha-9 may be introduced in the above cropping pattern because of its similar crop duration but 10% higher yield than Tori-7.
