The experiment  was conducted to study the effect of Bradyrhizobium on the yield performances of three varieties of mungbean viz . Binamoog-1, Binamoog-3 and Bari moog- 5. Binamoog-3 performed better than Binamoog-1 and Bari moog-5 i n respect of nodule production, branch/plant, pod length, 1000 seed weight, and seed and straw yields. All the varieties responded significantly to bio-fertilizer with respect to nodule number, pods/plant, seed yield and harvest index compared to chemical fertilizer and control. Chemical fertilizers increased branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/pod and seed yield significantly in comparison with control. The maximum seed yield was obtained in Binamoog-3 (810.4 kg/ha) followed by Binamoog-1 (759.6 kg/ha). The minimum seed yield was found in Barimoog-5 (495.6 kg/ha) with control treatment.

To see the effects of Bradyrhizobium bio-fertilizer vis-a-vis chemical fertilizer on the yield and yield attributes of three mungbean varieties.

The experiment was conducted at the field of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agricul ture (BINA), Mymensingh during Rabi season from October 1999 to February, 2000 . The soil was non-calcareous dark grey floodplain, sandy loam with 6.8 pH. The study consists of two sets of treatments : (i) Crop variety (i i ) Fertilizer. Binamoog-1 , Binamoog-3 and Barimoog-5 were used as crop varieties. Fertilizer treatments were Bradyrhiwbium bio-fertilizer, chemical fertilizer and no fertilizer (control ). The Bradyrhiozbium strains were collected from the Soil Microbiology Laboratory of BINA, Mymensingh . Liquid broth of BINA-MB mixed culture of three strains viz., BINA-MB-SPlO , BINA-MB-301 , BINA-MB- 441 were used in this experiment. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications assigning crop variety in the main plot and fertilizer i n the sub-plots. The uni t plot size was 4m x 3m. The plots (chemical ferti lizer treated) were fertilized with 15, 10.5, 13, 7, 0.95, 0.5 kg/ha of NPKSZnB from the source of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, ZnO and Borax, respectivelyy . The recommended seed rate (25 kg/ha) was used. Seeds were mixed with liquid d Bradyrhizobium broth culture as per treatment in a poly-ethylene bag and were kept in a cool dry place. All the seeds were sown in the afternoon of 31 October, 1999 following line sowing method. Line to line distance was 25 cm. Intercultural operation  such as weeding, thinning, irrigation and pesticide spraying were done as and when necessary. Data on plant and yield contributing parameters like plant population, plan t height, branches/plant, pods/plant pod length, seeds/pod and 1000 seed weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants at harvest from each plot. Seed and stover yieldsds were noted from the h harvests of 2 linear meter from 3 lines of each plot. The data were statistically analyzed with the help of computerized statistical program MSTAT and significance of the mean differences were adjudged by the Duncun 's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

The highest seed yield was recorded in Binamoog-3 (896.2 kg/ha) with bio­fertilizer and that was followed by the same variety with chemical fertilizer (853.3 kg/ha). Binamoog-1 and Binamoog-3 produced statistically similar seed yield in control plots (Table 3). Among the varieties, the lowest seed yield was obtained from Bari moog-5 (447.5 kg/ha) in control plots. Although the straw yield was statistically insignificant, the highest straw yield (2045.1 kg/ha) was recorded in Binamoog-3 wi th bio-ferti lizer whi le the lowest was i n Bari moog-5 (1336. l kg/ha) in control. The highest harvest index was observed in Binamoog-3 (30.5%) with inoculation and the lowest in Barimoog-5 (25.1 %) in control.
