Development of Early Maturing and High Yielding Cotton Genotypes Through Induced Mutations

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Dry seeds of three advanced lines of cotton were irradiated with 200,300,400 and 500 Gy doses. In all the three advanced lines, survival percentages and seedling height decreased with the increased doses of radiation. A total of 50 putative mutants were selected from 8161 M2 on the basis of earliness, plant height, leaf colour, leaf shape and seed cotton yield / plant. In M3 only nine were selected based on the same criteria. In M4 generation, six mutants showed earliness and three produced higher seed cotton yield than their mother strains. Preliminary yield trial of the selected mutants showed two as early maturing and four as higher seed-cotton yield in Ms generation. These four mutants were finally chosen for further evaluation.

Objectives:

To develop high yielding and early maturing varieties using nuclear technique.

Methodology:

Dry seeds of the three advanced lines (S-71803958, S-71803785 and 398185) were irradiated with 200, 300, 400 and 500 Gy doses of gamma rays. A total of 3124 M1 plants were grown at Ishurdi during 1991-92. A closer spacing was maintained in this generation for minimum branching and fruiting. Data on survival percentage and shoot length of 30 days old seedling were taken from the field. Two early maturing bolls from each M, plant were collected for growing M2 generation. In M2 generation, only three seeds from each M, plants were bulked dose wise and sown in the middle of August 1992. Fertilizers were Used @ 200 kg Urea, 100 kg T.S.P., 100 kg M.P. and 4-5 tons cowdung per hectare. Distance. between rows and plants were 75 and 50 cm, respectively. Normal cultural practices were done during the entire growing period. Similar fertilizer doses and spacing were used in the following generation (M3 - M5))' The parental materials were sown along with the M2 plants for ensuring effective comparisons. In M3 generation, selected 50 morphological variants were grown in plant-progeny-rows without replication on first week of August 1993 for studying their breeding behaviour. Each row lenght was 10m. Data on days to maturity, plant height, number of bolls/plant and seed cotton yield/plant were recorded. In M4 generation, nine selected mutant were put into an observation trial along with their parental controls. Seeds were sown at Ishurdi in the middle of August, 1994. A randomized complete block design with two replications was followed. Plot size was 10 m x 2 m. In M5 generation, the previously selected nine mutants (CTM -10, CTM -110, CTM-42, CTM -86, CTM-51, CTM-6, CTM-37, CTM-30 and CTM-I07) along with their parents (S-7180958, S- 71803785 and 398185) were again tested in preliminary yield trials at two locations viz, Ishurdi and Magura during 1995-1996. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 7.5m x 4m. Data on plant height (cm), days to first flowering, first boll opening, and maturity, number of bolls/plant and seed cotton yield/plot were recorded. Then plot yield was converted to kg/ha. All the data were analysed statistically.
