Coefficients of Variation, Genetic Parameters, Correlation and Path Analysis in Bread Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different yield contributing characters and yield of fifteen genotypes of bread wheat were studied to estimate the components of variations, genetic parameters and correlation coefficients among them. High phenotypic coefficients of variation were observed for harvest index and glume weight/plant. Plant height,100-grain weight, spike length, glume weight/plant and harvest index showed high heritability estimates. Genetic advance was high in harvest index, glume weight/plant, 100 grain weight and plant height. Grain yield/plant had significant positive correlation with harvest index and substantial positive association with l00-grain weight. Path analysis indicated that harvest index, plant height, glume weight/plant and grains/ spike had direct effect on grain yield.

Objectives:

To study the variability, relationships among different characters and yield and the direct and indirect effects of these characters on grain yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with 15 local and exotic genotypes of bread wheat at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during November 1993 to April 1994. The genotypes were laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The plot size was 3m X 1 m with row to row and plant to plant spacing of 20cm and 5cm, respectively. Data were recorded from 10 randomly picked plants of each plot for plant height, spikes/plant, spike length, grains/spike, 100-grain weight, glume weight, harvest index and grain yield/plant. The variances and the coefficient of variation were estimated according to Burton (1952). The heritability (broad sense) estimates and the genetic advance in percentage of mean were calculated following Johnson et al. (1955). Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were estimated using the formula outlined by Fisher (1954). The path coefficient analysis was done as suggested by Dewey and Lu (1959).
