Correlation and Path Analysis Studies for Yield and Yield Related Traits in Rainfed Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fourteen rice genotypes viz., ten mutants, one advanced line and three varieties were grown during the T. aman seasons of 1995, 1996 and 1997. Observations were recorded for yield and six yield related characters to study the correlation and path coefficients. The characters plant height and number of effective tillers/hill showed significant positive correlations with grain yield/plant. Path analysis suggested that number of effective tillers/hill, number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight contributed greatly to grain yield through their direct effects. Plant height mostly contributed to the grain yield indirectly via number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight. In the light of present findings it may be concluded that emphasis should be given on number of effective tillers/hill, number of grains/panicle and l000-grain weight in selecting rice genotypes for higher grain yield.

Objectives:

To investigate correlation and path analysis among the yield related traits
To quantify the nature as well as the magnitude of direct and indirect effects of the yield components on grain yield of rice.

Methodology:

The experimental materials consisted of ten mutant lines and one advanced line BINA I4-10-10. The trial also included three varieties namely, BR 11, BR 25 and Pajam. The experiment was set at BINA Farm, Mymensingh during the successive T. aman season of 1995,1996 and 1997. It was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.0m X 3.0m. Spacing between hills,. rows, plots and replications were 15 cm, 20 cm, 60 cm and 75 cm. respectively. Standard cultural practices were followed as and when necessary. Ten sample plants from each plot were taken at random for recording observations of plant height (cm), number of effective tillers/hill, panicle length (cm), number of grain panicle, 1000-grain weight (g), days to mature and grain yield/plant (g). Appropriate statistical methods were followed considering three years observations for working out correlation coefficients (r). Direct and indirect effects were computed using these correlation coefficients as suggested by Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present investigation suggested that the number of effective tillers/hill, number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight were the major contributor to grain yield. Therefore, major emphasis on the proportionate improvement of these components in selecting high yielding rice genotypes should be given.
