Genetic Variability, Character Association and Path Analysis in Groundnut (arachis Hypogaea L.) Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty elite groundnut mutants were examined to assess variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis for pod yield and yield attributes. The study revealed high genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation for all the characters except days to first flowering and primary branch numbers. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was found for most of the characters. Primary branch, total pod and mature pod numbers showed significant positive phenotypic correlations with pod yield. Total and mature pod numbers interrelated negatively with l00-kernel and l00-pod weights, Finally, through path analysis, mature pod numbers had the highest positive direct effect on pod yield followed by l00-pod weight.

Objectives:

To the extent of genetic variability, interrelationships and path coefficient analysis amongst yield and yield attributes in 28 elite mutants and 2 cultivars of groundnut.

Methodology:

Pot experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during Kharif-l seasons of 1995 and 1996. Twenty eight mutant lines and two check cultivars, Dhaka-1 and Zhinga Badam, comprised experimental materials in this study. Randomised complete block designs were followed for the experiments, with 3 replications. Each pot (30 cm x 35 cm) containing 8 Kg sandy loam soils after well mixing with the given amounts of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash @ 0.75, 1.5 and 1.2 g equivalent to SO, and 120 kg /ha, respectively, was considered as experimental units. Five seeds / pot were sown on 15th April, 1995 and 10th March, 1996 at a depth of 3 cm, and finally thinned to one seedling after 15 days of emergence. Intercultural operations such as watering, weeding, etc. were followed as and when needed. All plants under the three replications were harvested at a time, 135 and 130 day after sowing for experiment 1 and 2, respectively. Data on morphological character such as primary branch, total and mature pod numbers I plant and 100-pod and 100- kernel weights were recorded. Flowers produced in each plant were recorded through daily flower counts, from the day flowering initiated upto final harvest and used for the calculation of reproductive efficiency.

Achievement/Findings:

Mature pods and 100-pod weight had high genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation together with high heritability and genetic advance. These two characters had shown significant positive correlations with pod yield in addition to the highest and second highest positive direct effects. Further more, primary branches had the highest indirect positive effect on yield. Therefore, emphasis should be given on these traits in future varietal improvement programmes in groundnut.
