Two New Mungbean Varieties- BINAmoog-3 and BINAmoog-4 for Cultivation in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BINAMOOG-3 (MC-30) and BINAMOOG-4 (MC-99), two winter type mungbean varieties derived by the pedigree method following a cross between a mutant (MB-55-4) and an exotic line (VC-1560D). The varieties were registered in 1997 for commercial cultivation in different locations of Bangladesh. In farmers' field trial at 8 locations during 1995-96, 1996-97 BINAMOOG-3 and BINAMOOG-4 gave an average seed yield of 906 kg/ha and 948 kg/ha respectively, compared to 793 kg/ ha for check variety, BINAMOOG-I and the increases over check variety were 14.25 and 19.55%, respectively. These two varieties also showed tolerance to Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) and Cercospora Leaf Sopt (CLS) diseases under field conditions. With the release of these two varieties mungbean production as a whole can be substantially increased in the country.

Objectives:

To develop large seeded, high yielding mungbean varieties with resistance to MYMV and CLS diseases.

Methodology:

A small seeded, low yielding mutant line MB--55-4 showing tolerance to MYMV was crossed with an exotic bold seeded line VC-1560D having resistance to di ease in November 1986. From F₂population some desirable recombinants were selected and further selection was made in F₃ to F₅ generations. A preliminary trial (PYT) in F₆ generation involving five promising lines was conducted at farm, Mymensingh including the parent strains and two controls in the winter season of 1992-93. Row to row and plant to plant spacings were 30 cm and 15 cm, respectively. Advanced yield trial (AYT) was also carried out with the five promising lines at two locations (Kishoregonj and Ishurdi) in 1993-94. In the next year, zonal yield trials (ZYT) were conducted with four promising lines at three location (Mymensingh, Kishoregonj and Magura). All the yield trials were laid out randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Unit plot size varied in different trials. Spacings were same as mentioned in the preliminary yield trial. On-farm trials were conducted with two highly promising lines, Me-30 and MC-99 at eight locations of the country during 1995-96 and 1996-97. Unit plot size was 10m x 8m in all the locations. Recommended management practices were followed to ensure normal growth and development of plants.
