Variability, Correlation Coefficient and Path Analysis in Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of 12 maize genotypes for yield and yield contributing characters showed the presence of variability in biomass yield, harvest index and grain yield. Moderate variation was observed in plant height. Biomass yield and plant height had positive significant association with grain yield. In path analysis, biomass yield had substantial direct effect on grain yield. During selection more emphasis should be given on biomass yield in improvement of maize yield.

Objectives:

To estimate the coefficient of variability for yield components the nature of association of different characters with yield. Path analysis.
To estimate the direct and indirect contribution of different characters to grain yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with 12 maize genotypes at the Genetics and Plant Breeding Research Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during October - April of 1994-95. The genotypes were M-60, M-86, M-90, B 18-2 9), 35-3, S53-4, Ferke, Pantnagar, Pozarica, Shuvra and Barnali. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4m x 3m which consisted of 12 rows. Row to row and plant to plant spacing were 75 cm and 25cm, respectively. Intercultural operations were done as en required to ensure normal growth of plants. Data on different characters, plant height, days to silking, days to pollen shedding, biomass yield, harvest and grain yield were taken. Coefficient of variability, correlation coefficients and path analysis were worked out following the methods as suggested by panse and Sukhatme (1959) and Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that biomass yield has direct positive effect on grain yield. So, more importance should be given on this character during selection for achieving higher yield.
