In an experiment relating to salinity, rice lines BINA-13 and BINA-l9 produced higher yield than Pokkali at salinity level of 3.6-6.9 dS/m and maintained comparable yield with Pokkali at higher salinity of 4.9-7.9 dS/m. Zarrak and Chinee recorded the highest and lowest yield, respectively compared to the above line. BI A-l3, BINA-19 and Pokkali had less leaf area at 60 days after transplant- mg than Zarrak and Chinese. Plant height of BINA-13 and BINA-l9 was lower but number of effective tillers and total dry matter (TDM) were similar with Pokkali at EC level 3.6-6.9 dS/m. Filled grains/panicle and HI at maturity were higher in BI. 'A-13 and BINA-19 at lower salinity (3.6-6.9 dS/m) but similar with Pokkali at higher salinity level (4.9-7.9 dS/m). Zarrak had medium plant height, highest number of effective tillers,1000-grain weight, filled grains/panicle and TDM. Chinese produced the shortest plant with lowest number of filled grains/panicle and and yield under low and high salinity levels. The result suggested that Zarrak, BINA-13 and BINA-19 can be grown in salinity levels ranging between 3.6-6.9 dS/ m for high yield.

Salinity tolerance in rice lines, Production potential

  Rice

To test adaptability of two rice mutants BINA-13 and BINA-19 developed by BINA in saline soil of Satkhira.

Experiment 1: The experiment was conducted at the Benarpota farm of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) at Satkhira. Two rice lines along with a check variety Pokkali (salt tolerant) were taken for the experiment. The design of the experiment was RCBD with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m with 20 cm x 15 cm plant spacing. For one hill one seedling was transplanted. The soils of the experimental farm were analyzed by Aich et al. 1994. The soils were clayey in nature. The range of organic matter total N, available P, CEC varied from 1.86 to 2.15%, 0.15 toO.19%, 16 to 20 mg kg-1 and 29.8 to 32.4 (meq/lOO g), respectively. The EC ranged from 2.0- 13.0 dS/m in soils of different locations of Benarpota farm campus. The soils were fertilized with 80 kg P205, 40 kg K20 and 90 kg N/ha. P and K and one third dose of N were applied basally. The remaining two thirds of N dose were applied at tillering and booting stages in two equal splits. Transplantation was done on January 20,1996. Soil salinity of the experimental field during the crop growth was measured as EC at every 15 day's intervals starting from January 20, 1996 at the depth of 0-15 cm and 16-30 cm and plotted separately . At maturity, plant height, number of effective tillers/hill, panicle length, number of grains/panicle, total dry matter (TDM)/m2, seed yield/m2' and HI were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants. DMRT tests were done to evaluate the mean data. Experiment II. (1996-97) : Selected rice lines BINA-13 and BINA-19 along with three checks Pokkali, Zarrak (Philippines) and Chinese were taken for the experiment. The experiment was again conducted at the same farm of BWDB at Satkhira. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m. For one hill one seedling was transplanted on January 20, 1997. At initial stage at higher salinity levels seedlings of all the varieties at the age of 30 days succumbed to injuries due to salinity. Retransplantation was done on February 4, 1997 with 45 day-old seedlings due to death of seedlings. The experiment was designed to test the genotypes under higher salinity level than that of the previous year. So the salinity level of the soil were maintained by applying extra salt (NaCl) at three different date. The salinity was measured as EC at 15 day's intervals starting from January 20.1997 during crop growth at the depth of 0-15, 16-30 and 31-60 cm and plotted separately. Data on plant height, number of tillers, leaf area and TDM were taken from randomly selected 6 plants at 30 and 60 days after transplanting. Data on plant height, number of effective tillers/plant, panicle length, number of grains/ panicle, TDM/m2, seed yield/m" and HI were also taken from 10 randomly selected plants at maturity and after harvest the mean data were tested with DMRT
