Comparative Susceptibility of Tomato Strains/varieties to Fruit Borer Helicoverpa Armigera

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two strains of tomato viz, A-2, and E-6 developed at BINA were screened along with the varieties RATAN and MANIK in the field during the rabi seasons of year 1991-92 and 1992-93.It was observed that the varieties/strains had differential response to the attack H. armigera. During 1991-92, a clear difference was observed between Mymensingh and Ishurdi regarding the percentage of fruits infested by H. armigera. At Mymensingh, the infestation was found to be higher than that of Ishurdi. Here, the percentage of infested fruits ranged from 1.34 to 8.25. The highest infestation was found on A-2 (8.25%) and this was followed by the variety Ratan (6.65%).The difference among different varieties/strains were significant statistically. But the difference of fruit damage among different varieties/strain were not significant statistically at Ishurdi. The lower incidence of fruit borer at Ishurdi might be due to the difference in pest population in different Agro-Ecological Zones of Bangladesh. During 1992-93, the percentage of infested fruit ranged from 2.50 to 10.42 and the difference among different varieties/strains were significant statistically. Here also, the highest infestation (10.42%) was observed on A-2 and the lowest infestation on "Manik" (2.50%). The variety Ratan and the strain E-6 were found to be intermediate between highest and another. The cause of difference with respect to percentage of fruit infestation was not studied but it might be attributed to the difference in the genetic make-up of different strains/varieties.

Objectives:

To investigate the level of susceptibility of some varieties/strains of tomato to Helicoverpa armigera (Hb).

Methodology:

Two strains of tomato viz, A-2, and E-6 developed at BINA were screened along with the varieties RATAN and MANIK in the field during the rabi seasons of year 1991-92 and 1992-93. During 1991-92, the experiments were conducted (i) BINA farm, Mymensingh and BINA sub-station farm, Ishurdi. During 1992-93, the experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh. A randomized block design was followed with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m with plant plant pacing 50 cm. Normal cultural practices were followed. After ripening, they were harvested twice in a week. At each harvest, the total number of fruits and number of damaged fruits among them were counted.

Achievement/Findings:

It is quite obvious from the results that the strain A-2 had considerably higher percentage of damaged fruit and hence, can be regarded as susceptible to tomato fruit borer. The least infestation of borer on variety "Manik" indicated resistance to the pest. The variety "Ratan" and the strain E-6 can be regarded as moderately susceptible to tomato fruit borer.
