Developmenmt of Package Technology for Quality Seed Production of Onion Variety Taherpuri

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Large bulb (15±2g) emerged earlier (5.1 DAP) when planted at the widest spacing of 30×20cm. The large bulbs produced the highest seed yield (877.90kg/ha). Plants raised with the widest spacing of 30×20cm showed the highest seed yield (781.12kg/ha). The estimated highest seed yield/ha (953.37kg) was obtained from the combination of the large bulb with the closer spacing (20×15cm). October 25^th planting had the highest seed yield (813.2kg/ha). The maximum number of umbels per plants (4.64), highest umbel diameter (7.02cm), maximum number of seeded fruits per umbel (132.7), highest seed yield per plant, highest germination (86.58%), and highest weight of seeds per umbel (0.959g) were produced by the bulbs planted at mid November. The large bulb had the highest seed yield (848.4kg/ha). The estimated highest yield (968.0 kg/ha) was obtained from the combination of the large bulb (15±2g) with the mid planting time (15^th November). The maximum seed yield (605.38 kg/ha) was obtained from applying 170.2 kg N/ha. The highest seed yield (606.06 kg/ha) was recorded in 130.8 kg k/ha. The highest seed yield (726.60 kg/ha), the maximum 1000-seed weight (3.78g) and maximum seed germination (92.20 %) were recorded in 170.2 kg N/ha with 130.8 kg k/ha.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The Experimental material was the bulbs of “Taherpuri onion”, a cherished local open pollinated cultivar. Bulbs were planted on specific dates and spacing as per the treatments of the study. Bulbs were set upright (Novak, 1979) at the depth of 2.5cm (Bhardwaj et al., 1991). Intercultural operations were done as and when required with standard procedures. The data were collected at various stages of the plant growth and development, during harvest, and also after the post harvest operation of the seeds. Number of days to 50% emergence of bulbs was counted for each replication from three DAP. Later on, the average days to 50% emergence were enumerated and used in the analyses. The growth parameters were determined from the randomly selected 10 plants. The total amount of seeds for each plot was bulked and weighed in gram. The weight was taken up to two decimal places with an electronic balance. Germination test was conducted immediately after drying the harvested seeds in a germination chamber at the Lal Teer Seed Company Processing Centre, Bason, Gazipur under the ambient room temperature having three replications. For each treatment, 100 seeds were taken for each replication. The test was performed on the top of paper (TP) method with a petri dish (90 mm diameter). In each petri dish 100 seeds were placed on the filter paper (Whatmann no. 90) saturated with required amount of distilled water. The percent germination was recorded after 10 days of setting the test and evaluated according to ISTA (1996). Data collected from the experiment regarding various characteristics under the study were analyzed statistically with a computer using the statistical package program MSTAT C (Russel, 1986). The means for all the treatments were calculated and the analysis of variance was performed by the ‘F’ test.

Achievement/Findings:

For better yield and superior quality of onion seed production of the var. Taherpuri, the combination of large bulbs (15 ± 2g) with the spacing of 30×20cm, large bulb (15 ± 2g) with the mid planting (15th November),170.2kg N with130.8kg K and 12kg ZnSO₄ with 8kg bor0n/ha are more conducive.
