Relative Contribution of Different Production Factors on the Growth and Yield of Br14 Boro Rice

Objectives:

To see the relative contribution of the different production factors .i.e., nitrogen levels, weed control and insect control measures on the yield of BR 14 grown in boro season.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with the modern boro rice variety BR14 and it was set following RCBD with 3 replications at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 1994 to May 1995. The experiment consisted of three factors such as (1) nitrogen (N) rate - (i) 70 kg/ha, (ii) 80 kg/ha and (iii) 95 kg/ha; (2) weed (W) management - (i) no weeding and (ii) weeding twice and (3) insecticide (I) application - (i) no insecticide application (ii) application of Basudin 10G. Unit plot size was 4m x 2.5m. Nursery bed and main field were prepared by ploughing and laddering. Seeds were sown in the nursery bed on 23 November 1994. Fifty day old seedlings were then transplanted on 16 January 1995 in the main field. Nitrogen in the form of urea was applied on 15, 30 and 50 days after transplanting. For the treatments having 70 kg N/ha 20,22 and 28 kg N/ha, for 80 kg N/ha 22, 28 and 30 kg N/ha and for 95 kg N/ha 28, 30 and 37 kg N/ha were applied in three installments on 30 January 1995, 14 February 1995 and 4 March 1995. Incase of weeding treatments, first weeding was done 25 days after transplanting and second weeding was done 45 days after transplanting. In respect of insecticide treatments, Basudin 10G was applied twice @ 16.8 kg/ha at 25 and 45 days after transplanting. The crop field was irrigated as and when necessary. Data on plant height (em), number of effective tillers per hill, number of grain per panicle, 1000 grain weight (g), grain yield (g/plot) and straw yield (g/plot) were recorded. Data were collected from five randomly selected hills from each plot for all the characters. The means were tested by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) according to formula given by Steel and Torrie (1960).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present investigation clearly indicated that a significant improvement in growth and yield of rice cv. BR14 is possible through the combined application of 80 kg N/ha and weeding application. It appeared that weeding had the highest contribution to grain yield followed by nitrogen application. In general, the combined effect of N-fertilizer application and weed control was found to be superior followed by N fertilizer and insect control. Insect pest infestation was below the agronomic threshold level (ETL) so that insect control measures individually did not show any significant contribution.
